I'm a Quitter

My name is Denise and I live in KY. I quit smoking on Dec 30 2008 and am determined to stay quit. Since weight gain has always been a backdoor to relapse for me, I've started a workout program and figure that while I'm at it, I might as well take off the extra pounds I already had.

My Tennessee Walking Horse, Dancer, is a great buddy and my own personal therapy critter. He and dogs Telly and Kiya provide good incentives to get outside and move around. But I've also started going to ...

My Tennessee Walking Horse, Dancer, is a great buddy and my own personal therapy critter. He and dogs Telly and Kiya provide good incentives to get outside and move around. But I've also started going to the city fitness center and with a trainer's help have put together a cardio and weight training program. This is the first time in more than 25 years that I've had a dedicated workout routine and I'm loving it! I'd forgotten that I could feel so good.

My Goals:
To remain a nonsmoker
To lose 20 pounds
To become a better horseperson
To become a better personperson ;-)

Feb. 27 2009 update: I am seriously considering doing a 5K Pump & Run in late March. Women get a minute knocked off their 5K time for each bench press they do at half body weight. I think I could probably plod through this!

Mar 7 2009: Sent in my entry form yesterday for the Pump & Run. I may be crossing the 5K finish line about the same time the half-marathoners are coming in, but I'm gonna do it!

Apr 1 2009 update: No foolin', I did that Pump & Run last weekend. Managed only two bench presses at 90 pounds and learned that since there were no age brackets, I hadn't a prayer of placing. But I was still eligible to place in the 5K on my actual time, and managed a bronze in my age group. My first-ever prize for an athletic event, coming to me at age 53 and not quite three months after I quit smoking. Wheeeee!

My Program:
Working the American Lung Association's Freedom from Smoking Online program.

Joined city's Fitness Center and am working a cardio and weight training program.

Continuing twice-weekly tai chi classes

Studying natural horsemanship methods and using them while working with my horse on the ground and in the saddle

Personal Information:
From California originally but left there in my early 20s. Lived in East Asia (S. Korea, Japan, China) for 20+ years before returning to the US in 2005. Rediscovered my youthful passion for horses here, although I maintained my lifelong passion for dogs wherever I have lived.
Married to a wonderfully understanding and tolerant man since 2006, and became a grandmother four times over by marrying him.

Hey!

I am sending out a personal invite to all my spark to The Rocky Summer Challenge, a challenge that is designed to help you build strength in your core, upper body and lower body along with building up your endurance in cardio while also combining the fun of “The Biggest Loser” weight loss idea. This challenge starts on June 1st and will last 4 weeks. Sign up are on my team, “The Challenge” which is located on my sparks page. (The thread is in the introduce yourself forum). More info is included there too (you don’t have to join in order to see the info) and you can email me a request for more details before joining.

We have done this challenge before (before the team was started) and it was a huge success. The request from spark buddies, who took part in this last time, has been tremendous so it’s coming back!!!

I encourage you all to invite a buddy to the team (everything is more fun with a friend) and if you do so, I’ll be pairing you both (or how ever many) onto the same team together. Remember the more the merrier!

Hugs-Kat

haha!!! that cracked me up, what you wrote about being a western pleasure horse in a previous life!!! In my circle of horsey friends, we have ALL noticed that we have horses that either look like us, or match our personalities...for instance, I am big boned and kind of lanky, and I have a big nose, and when I go for a walk, I always end up walking too fast. (just like a tennessee walking horse). !!! Too bad I have the racing gene somewhere in there; maybe I'm a crossbreed!
Yeah, I'm just going to do it and not even enter into the catagory that is timed. Its a $15.00 donation and we get tee shirts but I think I will order a Sparkpeople t shirt to wear for the event!!!!!

Okay, so coincidently enough, my daughter emailed me today and wants me to do a 5 mile run/walk thing called "the Alaska Run for Women".......so I guess I'll try it, but I'm going to enter as a walker only ...gotta start out slow. I kind of compare myself to a high strung thoroughbred who just gets too hyped up if everyone else is running past me. If I go to the back of the pack where all the walkers are I should be fine! AND, its a benefit run for breastcancer research. Its in June, so lots of time to stay motivated to keep exercising! If you can do it, so can I!!!!!! thanks for the encouragement!

No I was not at Ft Stewart, but i was at Ft Godon, GA for AIT. I was stationed as Camp Darby, Italy for 2 years (1986-1988) and also spent some time at Menwith Hill, Great Britian for a month. My last duty staion was Ft Huachuca, AZ (1988-1990). Italy was a dream assignmet because I absolutely LOVE Pasta.. I gained a lot of weight there.

Talk to you soon,
Sherra
