Struggling to make better choices

Thursday, April 12, 2012

There was a slogan many years ago, some still use it, YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT. It is so true. I notice that when I eat too much sugar I feel sluggish, moody and have stomach issues. Because of my heart disease and other medical conditions making wise food choices is a priority.

I enjoy reading about foods and whether they are healthy for us.

The American Heart Association recommends that women eat or drink no more than 20 grams of sugar a day, which is the equivalent of one Twinkie.

For men, the AHA recommends no more than 36 grams, which is slightly more than one Snickers bar, at 30 grams.

So here is a list of eight foods with more sugar than a Twinkie, courtesy The Huffington Post:

1.Yogurt. It's often part of a healthy diet, but check the label for sugar content. Some fruit-flavored yogurts can have as much as 32 grams of sugar.

2.Tomato sauce. The sugar content varies. Check the label.

3.Granola bars. Sometimes, you might as well have a Snickers!

4.Fat-free salad dressing. When manufacturers take out the fat, they add sugar for taste.

5.Muffins. Many have just as much sugar as a doughnut, plus they're often super-sized.

6.Canned fruit.

7.Smoothies. Some popular brands contain anywhere from 38 to 70 grams of sugar!

8.Cereal. Check the labels! A public health group says 40 brands contain more than 11 grams per serving, more than 3 Chips Ahoy! cookies.

Staying away from sugar seems to be the key. I am a confirmed sugar addict and right now I'm going to have to go cold turkey! Thanks for the reminder!

Great info--it makes me feel so superior since I don't eat any of that stuff. True, some of it is because of my food allergy, but I have become such a dedicated label reader that I frequently just put things back after reading the label!

I hadn't realized that about yogurt. I can tell a difference of how I feel depending on the foods I eat. Thanks for writing this.

Great job researching this stuff. It was reading about juice vs eating a piece of fruit that finally got me to start drinking more water and measure my juice when I had it.

emoticon for the reminder - when processors reduced the fat they added the sugar and we sometime get caught unaware!

Good for you researching. As an old diet hand, I knew they took out the fat and replaced it with sugar to make it taste better. I guess that is why the only thing I drink is water and green tea, and avoid most processed foods. Plain Greek yogurt will help avoid the sugars. Nothing tastes better in the sweet department then fresh fruit in my opinion -can't get enough strawberries :)
Keep on making the choices that are best for your health! Your own body is letting you know when you stray and that is a good thing!

Good posting! I remember when I used to believe that cereal was good for me because it was "fortified." I gave myself a blank check to eat it as much as I wanted.

Information like that in your blog posts shows us that there's a lot to understand about the food we're eating. Thanks for the reminder!
