Financial setback, but triumph over unhealthy eating. :)

Monday, June 25, 2012

I decided to take a mental health day today and take it easy a little. Then I remembered that the "Maintenance Required" light was on in my car, which meant that the oil needed to get changed. So off I went to a place that a co-worker of mine trusts his car in order to get the oil changed and the tires rotated, since they need to be done every 5,000 miles to make sure that the tires last as long as they can.

Granted, I should have known that the front two tires needed to be replaced, since I replaced the back two last fall, but I just hate spending that much money at any given time. They also said I needed a wheel alignment, and since I want to protect those new tires, I plopped down money for that too. Total damage: $400. Fortunately, I have an emergency fund, but it was still painful to see that money go.

Since this was all happening at lunchtime, I figured that I'd see what was available to eat. I went to one place, looked at the menu and asked if they have any other vegetables as a side dish other than salad and broccoli, since I can't eat leafy greens or broccoli due to my warfarin use. When they said there were no other options other than fried side items (which aren't good for my digestive system, since I no longer have a gall bladder), I walked away and decided to wait until I got home. I'm finding that I'm much more comfortable walking away from a restaurant if they don't have healthy options that I can eat than I used to be.

Alright, off to finish my lunch (beef stew! YUM) and then to tackle the rest of my day. Happy Monday, everyone!

You are so wise to have an emergency fund! and for leaving that place that did not have good choices for you to eat! You are inspiring me! May your tires last a long, long time. I don't drive a car so my worries are my shoes wearing out. :)

Sassispring, fortunately for me, I live in Memphis, so no need for snow/ice tires, thank goodness! After 39 years having to deal with all that ice and snow, I'm glad I live in an area that may on occasion have cold weather, but for the most part, doesn't have a lot of issues with winter. I'll also say that I'm happy that last winter, I decided to start an emergency fund as I was starting to get out of debt. I only have 6 more months until I'm free of my credit cards, so I'll start re-funding my emergency fund after I get that done.

Sometimes a girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do. :)

Good on you for walking away from the unhealthy choices, that is a good step forward in your journey. You paid $400 for a wheel alignment and 2 tires? I dream of that, really dream of that....but then my tires are very expensive as I have to purchase ice tires (around $600 per tire). Unexpected costs are a kick in the pants eh but sounds like you were able to deal with it, using a very positive attitude. Good for you.

Maybe that restaurant will think twice about stocking fresh carrots or something else...
wouldn't it be neat if they offered a big fresh veggie platter as an appetizer?? I wouldn't get an entree`!!!
