Updates post-paleo

Thursday, July 12, 2012

Sorry - this is quick. I actually posted this on Mar's sparkpage and then decided it would be better as a blog post! Sorry for the lack of blogging & updating... I've been working late every day after spending last weekend doing nothing feeling sick, and I just haven't had a break.

I am feeling better, finally - as of Monday, it was like somebody flipped a switch. Two weeks of paleo, and two weeks of feeling crummy... but I really don't think they're connected, just a big coincidence because I felt the same (crummy) way last November, which was definitely not paleo; and I started feeling crummy on a Thursday, whereas I didn't start eating paleo til Sat or Sunday... so not connected! I will however accuse paleo for the unending headaches... which thank goodness have gone away now. And for the low energy when exercising - I just couldn't keep an intensity up, and the day I jumped on the bike I think I only lasted about 20 minutes before I wanted to quit.

I think I'm going to continue cruising along with a lowered carb intake and not shy away from fats as much as I used to; however, I don't plan to stay paleo or forbid the occasional grilled cheese sandwich, fancy dinner out, or slice of birthday cake. I'm sticking with no sugar or splenda in my coffee and tea - I think that was a great habit to get into. I'm also having more snacks of nuts and almost no snacks of carbs, and when I do have fruit, I'll have protein or fat (nuts) with it, so it's not such a sugar hit. I keep reminding myself: SUGAR IS SUGAR, even if it goes into your mouth as a starch, it becomes a sugar in your body. Sugar is sugar.

As for getting back into weight loss mode... I'm swamped this weekend (going out of town tomorrow!) but after that I plan to start exercising again - this past 2 weeks has been highly sedentary and kind of saddening. Stay tuned!

Wow, it's amazing how much your body can react when it needs something! Good thing you quit paleo -- although sorry it had such nasty side affects! Another lesson learned! (Does anyone else feel like they're taking a very low-pressure class? I'm learning new stuff all the time -- only this interests me!)

Even if paleo wasn't the right track for you, it sounds like you picked up some good habits that you can take with you! Great job!

The beauty of trying different eating lifestyles is you can select which parts work for you and which don't. A high protein diet *definitely* can trigger headaches, and make low energy happen, which you have astutely noticed. Incorporate what you like into a new lifestyle, and toss out what didn't work!

Yikes! I'm sorry you've been feeling so sickly. That's not good at all! Hopefully you'll find that happy medium, and you can go back to feeling like working out again. Hearing that you're not up for your workouts worries me because you're the queen of exercise! I'm glad that you're taking a weekend off...take it easy and recharge!

P.S. I read up on spinach pasta...and you're right. Of course. I guess my dad wasn't properly informed on what spinach pasta is really about. I'll have to call and tell him. I also looked up some paleo recipes for squash pasta. Edward's gonna have a stroke when he sees the grocery list I'm working on. :)

P.P.S. I wanted to say thanks for not pulling any punches with me. Only a real friend will tell you like it is, even if it isn't good news. Love!

I'm no paleo expert- can you eat nuts? I love eating nuts as my recovery meal or preworkout snacks. You'll find your groove, just keep going! emoticon
