Sleep is necessary...

Thursday, August 09, 2012

I didn't get enough sleep last night. I stayed up late reading. I have found though that as I get more active I require more sleep than I used to need. I exhaust myself many days, and a good 9 hours of sleep seems to be necessary. I think this is pretty normal. What about everyone else? How much sleep do you need/get?

I walked and jogged today, but that was the extent of my physical activity. Tomorrow I go to help with harvest early in the morning, then off to the gym for a workout. I am not sure how hard of a workout I will do though in anticipation of the race on Saturday. My running buddies both bailed on my for the race, so I will be running it alone. I am still going to try my best, but I work harder when I have company, someone to compete against. I know there will be plenty of other people running, but it isn't the same. If I can do better than 40 minutes I will be more than happy with my effort.

The weather is finally cooling off a little, and it actually rained for a little while today, which made me happy. It might be raining in the morning (50% chance), which doesn't make me as happy, but I show up to help with harvest rain or shine, just like I run... rain or shine.

I shoot for 8 hours, but usually manage about 7 lately. I think you should take it easy before the race. I'm sorry your friends bailed out on you, but you can do it.

Yeah, sleep is precious. I have a few pains and restless leg syndrome on top of a tendency to wake up to pee multiple times a night. So sleep evades me 'way too often, no matter how early I go to bed or how late I sleep. Precious.

7 hours seems to be enough for me now matter what my level of fitness is. There are certain times in the month (if you catch my drift) that I only get a few hours. My doctor says this is normal for people who work out as much as I do.

I would take it easy the day before a race but I'm not much of a runner!

As far as sleep goes - you are listening to your body. emoticon As long as you continue to do that you will get the right amount of sleep for YOU. That is what is important.

As far as the two that bailed on you, no worries. Find someone to "chase". Once the race starts you pick someone ahead of you to chase, if you catch them - pick someone else. I do this with the dog on walks (we try to catch up to other dogs to greet). It really keeps us at a good pace without going crazy (after all, the point is to chase not catch).

Good luck emoticon

Take it easy today! I try to take a rest day before a race and do NOTHING, otherwise I find I drag. But I'm a LOT older than you too!

8 hours or more, or I'm useless. Interestingly, my husband often gets insomnia and / or tosses and turns a lot, but he doesn't really get any exercise, either (he recently started his first desk job, whereas he used to have really active jobs that required him to run around all day). Me, though? I'm a brick. Active bodies need rest.

I get more sleep when I exercise (7-8 hrs) and toss and turn when I skip a day and I am luck if I get in 4 hrs on those days.
Enjoy the harvesting.
Hugs

I've always needed my sleep and I aim for 8 hours. But I have noticed that I seem to sleep a lot deeper and wake up less often now that I'm exercising. So I think I'm getting a better quality of sleep now even though the quantity hasn't necessarily increased.

I haven't slept properly in the last two weeks and I'm really feeling it. I had a decent amount last night but it's not enough!

When you say help with harvest, what are you harvesting? When I was a kid, it always meant picking the fruit off the trees. xoxo

I always try for about 8 hours, but wake up intermittently.

Our weather was cooler here too in MN. Even a few scattered sun showers.

I usually get 6-7 hours sleep, sometimes more depending on my work schedule.
Today I started at 10, so I got a few extra hours sleep which felt so good.
