The Dilemma: When to buy new clothes? |

I think it's important to have at least a small wardrobe that makes you feel good about your body image as you lose? Lucky for me, I have never gotten rid of smaller sizes...only larger ones. When your clothes are hanging off of you, your mind can't adjust to your new shape, and you can't really see the progress you've made.

I have been wearing the same clothes for ten years. I wear suits for work. I am glad they still fit, but then I'm sad they still fit at the same time. :( I can't justify buying new ones when they fit. I just think its crazy that ten years have gone by so fast and the clothes are the same.
Good thing I don't buy trendy things!

The deals at Costco are amazing, and the price is right. Seriously! Check it out. I purchased and entire week's worth of clothing for $90. Seriously! Here's my inventory... ... two pairs of slim capris (size 14) ... one pair of casual capris (size 10?- just goes to show that size # means nothing!) ... one pair of true slacks ... one skirt (work) large ... two dressy long sleeved work tops medium ... one sweater large I got ALL of this for just $90 (that includes Tax)!!!! You can't beat that in my opinion. One tip- buy the stuff, then head straight to the restroom to try it on. If it doesn't fit, you can return it right then and there.... I call this the convenience cost of Costco. LOL.

I am now wearing some skirts that I bought 20- 25 years ago -- and probably packed away about 20 years ago. Just today, I found 2 really nice slacks that I probably bought 6 years ago when I had previously lost some weight -- and packed away after only 1 year when I gained some of the weight back. I am so happy I never got rid of those clothes. I did get rid of some clothes that I didn't love -- but I kept some of my favority things as I outgrew them. I am doing the same as I lose the weight -- getting rid of some things, but keeping some of my favorites and most practical items "just in case."

Let's be realistic, buy some when you can, and don't toss them away, label them and pack them away, you will be glad you did.................plan for any change in happenings, clothes cost too much to toss or give away.

This is an interesting string . . . as I'm reading along, there's nothing written that couldn't be the answer . . . however, it becomes pretty obvious after you read a few posts that it's highly personal. I've lost 40 pounds - had some smaller clothes stashed "just in case I ever lost some weight" - have been able to blow through them and just bought some new jeans. It was really, really exciting have jeans on my butt and then to see jeans in my shopping cart that didn't have a size that started with a 2! Having said all that - my hindsight advice would be: make your decision, then enjoy your choice!!

The last time I lost weight I kept wearing the same oversized clothes because I didn't want to waste money on t transitional clothing. This was not healthy for me. I never appreciated the 80lbs loss and I had a difficult time believing I was able to fit into a much smaller size. Mentally I was still a plus size. I also didn't notice when the weight started to creep back on.

When I have to pull up the pants or tug on anything, it's time to replace them. I agree with the whole donate your 'fat' clothes and pick up new ones at the thrift shops idea. One thing I have found is that if I wear skirts and dresses, the size is much more flexible than if I wear pants.

From when I started my journey, I started in a tight size 18w. I kept those work pants and washed them daily through the past 30 pounds! I went from tight, to needing a belt on the loosest, to needing a belt to hold them up. I found a new pair at Wal-Mart on clearance for $5 in a size 14, so went with that. I'll wear them until I need a belt on the tightest to keep them up as well. :) As for personal/non-work clothing. I had 2 pair of jeans that were 18w, stretchy denim. It was easier to wear them through the pounds coming off, but even they came to the point that my hem was beneath my heels because I just couldn't keep them pulled up well enough. So, this past week, I went shopping at JcPenny for new bras (HAD to have for obvious reasons). As we went to pay, I saw some jeans on sale for $12. So, I tried on a regular 16 and a regular 14. 16 was too big, 14 fit well enough, but being stretchy denim, I was able to feel some space in the belly area. I asked my daughter to run back and get a 12 just to see if I could get into them at all. It was TOUGH, took a few jumps to get the belly fat inside, over the hips, etc... I told her they were just too tight. She says, "Mom, do you know how many people do this to get into jeans EVERY DAY?" ...lol... so I bought the 12's. Less than a week later, I'm already much more comfortable in them, and can wear them likely until I hit my final size goal of 8 or 10. Shirts, like many other people are saying, I'm not going to invest in until I'm at goal. Being top-heavy, most of my shirts were still too tight anyway... so It's nice having them fit better now.

were I stand with clothes right now is; I can wear smaller bottoms , I find them in my closet...the tops are just fitting looser and nicer....not going to buy anything new til fall..then I'll get a few pieces, not too many, hopefully they will be in a smaller size....I really wont be highly enthusiastic about buying new clothes til I can fit in regular sizes... as for my clothes (size 2x and 1x) I have friends who want them once they become way too big...

I like the style and the material that my big clothes have. Pants that slip, I have to release either to the rag bag or a consignment shop or dontate. While I don't mind wearing clothes that are too big for me, I don't want to be embarrassed about finding pants at my ankles while in public or while in a professional environment.

Great post Dutchie77. I'm so happy for your coworker that he has you and others to notice his achievemnets and encourage him! Have you gotten him on Spark yet? I agree, we all got to where we were at our heaviest or unhealthist by NOT caring for ourselves. I say buying one outfit or feel good article for when you need it is sending a positive and reinforcing message and breaking an old habit of not loving ourselves enough to make those choices! Burn the candle, wear the lingerie, use the china! Life is too short to not enjoy everyday of our journey!

My husband and I encountered this problem when we lost weight too. He was more reluctant to go clothes shopping- I don't think he wanted to be disappointed if he didn't fit what he wanted to fit or didn't see the results he thought he would. I was much quicker to the draw on clothes. If something started to get too big, I wanted the next smaller size immediately. The other issue was purchasing them- how much to spend, where to buy, etc. We knew we were going to lose a lot of weight (over 200 lbs between the two of us when we finished) and so we were going to go through a lot of sizes of clothes. We'd use what we had kept over the years in our closets as much as possible, but we were still going to need new stuff. We ended up going to the Salvation Army stores and Goodwill stores around us. There were TONS of options, a great deal of designer clothes and we also found that most of those stores received all the excess clothes from the area Target stores when they had gone out of season or hadn't sold that well in the store. We got fabulous deals ($2 Oscar De La Renta pants, $5 Perry Ellis dress shirts and slacks, etc.) so we didn't feel like we were throwing money down the drain. And the best part was that when we had "undergrown" the clothes, we could take them right back and get a tax deduction for it!! We also took all the clothes from our own closet there. We have one final trip of "too big" clothes left for this year's tax deduction. It's a great option- it's hard for me to shop retail now, even for my "permanent" wardrobe! You'll be surprised at what you can find and the quality that's there. It just takes the time to look. :) I'd suggest going when the clothes are getting annoyingly big- you have to keep pulling up your pants, etc. Having clothes that fit right makes such a difference in your attitude towards weight loss and others' attitude towards you losing!

This is a real dilemma for me this morning. I am waiting for some new things I ordered to arrive in the mail. The sooner the better, because I'm having a hard time finding things that are appropriate to wear to work. My pants are dangerously close to looking like pajama pants -- and these used to be my small pants. I was going to wait until I was closer to my goal to get more clothes, but I hate wearing too big stuff now. When I was 285 pounds I liked my clothes really oversized, because I felt it made me look smaller. Now that I'm smaller, oversized clothing seems to make me look bigger. Sigh.....

I agree Jeanne! I don't want to wear the clothes that no longer fit me. I have been buying some simple pieces and a few pairs of pants. I also have been getting some dresses and skirts. I want to show off how I look and not hide inside too-big clothing. I packed away several articles of clothing yesterday to give to charity. I don't even want them in the house!

If they have a second hand store maybe you can find some things there or go to a cheaper store and just get a couple of outfits if it fits the budget.

I'm just starting out this time, but I plan to do what I've done when I lost weight in the past, which was to buy pieces as I needed them. If all of my pants were too big, I'd buy a pair or two of new ones at my new size, even if I hadn't reached my goal yet. While I might wait until I've hit my goal weight to truly stock up, I believe we all deserve to have at least a basic wardrobe of clothing that fits at all times.

I did the wrong thing and "treated" myself to quite a few new clothes every time I became a new size. It was so exciting to look good in a small size that I felt I HAD to buy whatever I tried on. Unfortunately, the clothes were often only good for a week or two before they were too big on me. That was an expensive mistake! I recommend only scraping by on the bare minimum of new clothes until you are maybe 5 lbs from your goal weight. My clothing sizes changed drastically just 10 or 15 pounds from my goal weight, so don't let yourself be tempted into shopping prematurely. eBay is a great place to find new or gently used clothing items for very little money. I like it better than thrift store shopping because the selection is huge and you can browse by brand. I got a lot of clothes that way when I was halfway to my goal weight, often spending under $10 for a shirt from my favorite store.

hey way to go to everyone who has had to buy new clothes and kudo's to those who are working on it. as i live in baja it is pretty casual here, but i have just put away all the 24s that were falling off me and 22s are loose and bought a few 20s and they are snug depending on the brand, but i shop the segundos ie second hand stores and swap meets here. i will buy some brand new things when i get down to an 18 and just go from there. i also have a great friend who brings me things from her daughter's closet for me. another suggestion is a clothes swap, get together with some friends of varying sizes and swap some outfits. good luck to everyone and remember it is day by day or as we say in baja poco en poco which means little by little.

If something is too big and you have a sewing machine. Try and alter it. Tank tops, stretchy larger shirts, shorts. All super easy to modify. And if it is really to large for you what is the harm if you do it wrong, you have extra material to work with; an your probably not going to wear it or use it again anyways. This has helped me save on clothing. If clothes are to large on me I can't stand it. I love being active now and having clothings' that fit remind me that I have come along, but have further to go. I also make sure to take my time and choose quality over quantity. So when I shop I shop for the future. Like I will wait to find a "great" pair of jeans or a "perfect" dress. If I am spending money even at a thrift store I want what I buy to make me feel confident when I put it on.

Clothes that were really large, I just got rid of, but now I tend to invest in clothing that looks good whether slightly body skimming or a little larger. This way I know I can wear it for a little longer. Flowy tops and dresses are always a great investment that you'll have for awhile throughout your weight loss process.

My post is likely to get lost in the milion that have already been posted here...but wanted to share. I've never had a lot of weight to use so haven't had to make this decision but as an outsider I can share an experience. A guy here at work has lost about 50lbs so far - and he's still working. We could all see that he was doing a great job losing the weight but then last week he bought new clothes. I can't believe the transformation! So if you have something really special to attend or just need some motivation I'd say go but at least one AWESOME outfit that will make you feel like a million bucks :) I can understand not wanting to have multiple wardrobes but you may not see your progress until you buy some clothing that fits you really well at the size you are currently at.

I've not lost much since joining SP, but am over 15 pounds down from my max (when I bought much of what I have now). A friend called me today and said, "I didn't get a chance to tell you at church, but you really need to get some new jeans!" hehe I knew they were BIG on me, but I was hoping to get another month or so out of them. Oh well. They're really nice, too, that I got as hand-me-downs from someone who had lost weight, from Ann Taylor Loft. And something I've been noticing, I really need some clothes to exercise in. All my old "exercise clothes" are so saggy/baggy now that I only sleep in them! And one last item, that I've been really noticing... The granny panties have got to go! But, I'm a big resale/thrift store kinda gal, always have been. There are some definite finds to be found. I also like Ross for the inexpensive filler piece. Thanks for reminding me that I have to go shopping...

I volunteer at a Food Pantry at a large church here in Oregon and our Clothes Closet operates at the same time--all FREE. There is a woman (who used to be homeless) who comes in just about every week. Each person is permitted one brown shopping bag full of clothes/shoes/purses, whatever. She looks like she just walked out of a catalogue all the time (she is an older woman)! I'm not kidding either. And she gets all these things for free by visiting the different churches in the area and going to their clothes which congregants bring in. I would suggest that if money is tight (and believe me, here in Oregon, money is tight so everyone is looking for a break). At our church, most of the volunteers are in the same boat. They get food and clothes, too, so no one is judging. Just call around to your local churches and find out if they have that particular ministry. I know they will be happy to help.

I was so excited to go to the beach last month that I hurriedly packed...only to find that I had forgotten to pack panties! So a trip to Wal-Mart was in order and I bought a smaller size. It was really nice to wear panties that fit properly and did not sag, wrinkle or bag. With all the thrift stores around, waiting "until" is not necessary. We need to dress the body we have now and receive the compliments now rather than waiting "until."

at the moment, I ve got 2 pair of jeans and a couple of skirts. I will have to sew myself a few skirts for fall and winter - and I'm knitting some cardigans at the moment. (well, one is already too big, but in the house?!). I'm looking forward to our Trip to England. Outlet, sale. Great. I dropped only one dressize - so a lot of stuff still fit.

I ended up having to buy a whole new wardrobe. I tried to wear my larger-size clothes as long as possible, but in time, it just proved impossible. When I tried to have them tailored, they still didn't fit quite right. I spent a lot of money on new clothes, but I got to redesign my wardrobe and in the long run it worked out great. Now I need to send the larger-size clothes to the goodwill. I have not had the courage to do that just yet, but reading other people's posts inspired me to take the leap.

I don't really have that problem. I love to go to Outlet stores where I buy clothes I like to see myself wearing soon. This way I keep my ambition up to loose my weight and as soon I fit in it I can wear new clothes and the old ones I am giving away gladly.

When I was losing weight, I went through a horrible period where pants were falling off, and I was being swamped by my dresses. I bought exactly four things to tide me over - jeans, cargo pants, and two extremely cheap dresses that were on sale. As long as the pants fit, I could get away with oversized tops. When I hit goal weight, I did two things. The first was buy the most expensive and flattering clothes I could afford, to feel fantastic in clothes. The second was to get rid of everything else from my wardrobe. People told me I was crazy, but I cleared my wardrobe of everything, even the most expensive things and clothes I'd loved (except some tops which were OK to wear in a too-big size). The reason I did this, is I never, ever want to be big enough to wear my old clothes. By buying the best clothes I could afford, I have significantly invested in my new weight and I really can't afford to get too big for these things. Because I got rid of my old clothes, I have no option left - I MUST fit into the clothes I have, or I will have wasted a lot of money. I tried to get some old clothes taken in by a tailor, but it didn't work. I guess it will work if you only have a small amount of weight to lose, but I lost more than 55 pounds (about 25 kilos) and my shape altered as I lost weight. Things that had been flattering on the fatter me looked very unflattering on the smaller me, even when taken in by a tailor. Fat bodies are shaped differently. If money is an issue, then getting clothes altered is the best bet. Otherwise, the best thing to do is buy clothes in your new size - and make them clothes that make you feel great, even if you buy them at a thrift store. The better you feel about yourself, the more motivated you'll be to stay at your new weight.

I try to wear things as long as I am able to before I replace them. Then, as I buy new clothing I make sure they are basic staples- like black trousers, jeans, things like that, so I can wear them repeatedly and it not be super noticable! Also, have any of you heard of mypoints.com? You can earn points by reading emails with advertisements and/or shopping online, and you can redeem the points for gift cards to a lot of different stores. I rarely shop online, unless it's something I need that I know I can get a good deal on, like textbooks or flights, so I mostly just get points by reading emails, and although it takes a while to earn enough points to get a gift card, I think it's totally worth it! I have about 6,500 points currently, and I am planning on getting a $100 gift card to Macy's when I have 11,500 points, which I think I can get to by the time I lose 50 lbs, so that is extra money for shopping! Anyway, just wanted to pass that resource on to you all, because it's free money, and who doesn't want that! Good luck to everyone, and happy shopping!

I waited until the clothes looked really bad. I filled in with tops and a few pants. I got away with my skirts for a longer time. Also, stuff I really liked I took to the tailor and had seat and waist taken in on pants, I found it to be more economical. I am still getting stuff altered and I am at goal. Some stuff was taken in twice...I have a great dress and skirt I got from Talbot's ...I had them each taken in and now I am having them "modernized "...

Find a sale, then buy! Like a 50% off flash sale at Lane Bryant this past Friday! Including clearance merchandise:) I am a teacher, so August is coming and I'm in between sizes...so I bought the snug size. I have one month to be in my snug ones - they fit, but they are snug. It just gives me more motivation to exercise! They will be comfortable by the end of August and I'll start the year more confident than ever because I'm one size down!!!!

I check two thrift stores when I have the chance for the size I wear now and the next size smaller for office and weekend clothes. Every time my underclothing pieces seem to fit not quite right, though, I get my bra size measured, try them on to find the right fit, then look for that bra NWT on ebay. I also shop clearance racks and watch the local newspaper for 50% off the clearance price coupons. I wear my saggy baggy clothes until strong winds threaten to disrobe me. When I have nice, fresh clothes that fit appropriately, I continue to want to wear what's emotionally familiar.

I keep 2-3 sizes moving in my closet. So, I have my "perfect fit" jeans, a pair that are a little big but not too baggy and a pair I'm working into. When I first started my journey it was hard because I would only be in a size for a few weeks/months before the pants I just bought were too big. Now that I'm approaching goal, it is easier, but still frustrating (in a good way) when I just bought a pair of 12s that are now sagging. I don't stress too much about my shirts because I can tuck if they are looking too baggy ( but I only have Ms and Ls now)

This is a big dilemma....sometimes if the outfit is getting slightly worn, take in the inseams and make it go until the next reduction and hello rag bag. This way I have some clothes to wear around the house/farm don't feel too bad if they get snugged or soiled with one of those under the breath moments. Other clothes not as worn what's the word...gently used...make their way to salvation army or goodwill.

Once they were sloppy big, I just bought a couple items at a time, piece by piece, but normally coordinated with the change of the season. I got away with tops longer because of my bust being large, but the pants had to be replaced. I mainly wear black, casual pants so I was able to get by with just a few pair, jeans on Friday, and 1 khaki pair, just not all at once. As I purged the clothes that were too big, I concentrated on fewer "work clothes". I also didn't want to get comfortable in what I had, so that's another reason to buy fewer clothes. Just enough to get you through. Jeans are great because the just go down with you for awhile, but that was the most exciting to me. I couldn't wait for those. Just don't get over excited and try hand me down, or try thrift stores. Save your money for the next phase. Maybe take more advantage of clearance sales which will be coming up soon. Congrats to you for needing to downsize!!

I've probably already posted to this, but I have to lose about 20 pounds (I'm 5'10) to change sizes, for the most part. I wear anything (now) from a 12 to a 16. At my lowest weight, I'm probably an 8-10 on the bottom, still a 12 or 14 on top. I prefer a range of sizes, since my size can fluctuate during time of month, etc. Sizes (according to manufacturers) are relative anyway---I can wear a 12 or 16 in the same article from the same store. I try not to take it to heart. Now measurements....that's a different issue.

Trousers have to be bought when the last ones feel baggy, but shirts and tops can be taken in a couple of inches the lazy way. Just turn them inside out and sew all the way down from the bottom of the arm holes half an inch away from both side seams and parallel to them. This takes them in one inch from each side without making them out of shape. If you want to emphasize your new waist, put in a couple of narrow darts at the back.

I remember tossing a tank top in my cart one size smaller than I had been wearing just to get home and find out it was too big. That was cool. After that I tried clothes on and found out I was several sizes smaller...

Here's a cheap trick. Shop in your own closet for things that didn't fit you before. Then I get with my friends and we all clean out closets and share clothes and pass them along since we're all along the size ranges. I was into a size 12 when I broke my neck in 2005 so I have tons of clothes to go through yet. Fortunately, though, I spend a lot of time in matching pajama outfits that go together so I don't have to get dressed all that much - especially now that I have broken my leg. And it keeps my laundry piles down. I keep clothes packed up by size so I can get excited about pulling out the next smaller size. A day to celebrate, for sure. Otherwise, I only shop when I absolutely NEED to buy something that fits perfectly - like for a job interview or wedding or funeral. Happy shopping to you all!

I am starting to pack things up and put them under my bed. Since my space is limited. I dont want to go back to that size 20, 18, 16, 14 any more. I want to be a 10. If I dont have these things to remind me then I can go forth. I am sending them to my sister who is a little heavier. Then I am going to buy uniforms for work. Two black pants and two blue pants then I will just rotate the shirts with nice belts. Big belts help you gather your clothes together. Until I meet my goal weight. I love shoes so I will treat my self to a new pair each time I lose 10 pounds.

I decided I would buy new clothes when what I currently wear is so large on me that I loos sloppy--not just roomy, but when the belt on my slacks causes extra "pleats" or the shoulder seams on blouses/shirts come more than 2 inches below where they're supposed to be.

My plan is to buy necessities as I go along while saving all the pennies I can that are leftover from each paycheck. Once I reach my goal weight, I'm going to use all the pennies I've saved up to buy as much of a brand new wardrobe as I can. Not only is that incentive for me to work hard, but also incentive to keep saving and not go overboard before I reach my ultimate goal.

what a good tip for looking presentable without doing too much work, and easy to modify without spending too much either. My trick is definitely shopping at thrift stores for quality cheap items that I won't wear forever.

each journey is individual - this too! you have to look presentable for work, and deserve to look good for personal events, and if workout clothes that "fit" motivate, then you'll want that too. If you have a lot to loose, don't bother with expensive clothes, because you won't be in them for long. My work trick is to always have a great fitting black jacket and I have a few elastic waist skirts with prints that include black and black shell tops. Looks very professional and the elastic waist is hidden under a belt.

I have taken the time to take in a few dresses and tops which were relatively easy to take in by just zipping up the side seams. A friend who had lost weight and didn't have financial resources was doing this and I got motivated to dust of the sewing machine which hadn't been used for years. I too am now finding myself with very little that fits well and everything is baggy. Went shopping today but came home with nothing. I am on a budget and didn't find what I wanted at Ross' and seem to be just a bit early for summer final season sales. I love to shop at the end of the season for extra percent off discounts. Hoping to that soon as the fall fashions begin to arrive. I am trusting we will have a bit of summer yet. I do believe it is important to have a few pieces which fit well. It's kind of a reward because I feel better in clothese which show off my accomplishments. Lots of good ideas here. Thanks everyone.
