I havent read all the posts, but I have read enough to know that I am different :P Well sort of different. Once I joined SP, I did get into a routine I guess. But then at some point, a few months in, I realized that the more I exercised, the hungrier I was. And I was hungry all the time. I woke up hungry, went to bed hungry - hungry all day long. And then I read that this journey is 80% nutrition. So I just decided to get a grip on my hunger, that would be my initial focus. I had been lowering carbs and then went pretty low carb and had read that my energy would be down and exercise would be difficult. I didnt need to hear anything else, as I hate chronic cardio exercise, for the most part, so I quit regular structured exercise. This was about mid-March. The exercise that I do get now, is mostly just around my home. I did my own landscaping this summer, I got a pushmower for my birthday for the hills and hard places that a rider can't get to (so it is a work-out) Mostly my exercise program this summer has just been tending my yard and garden - anywhere from 2 hours to 6 hours per day. Some swimming with the kids in the pond. Except this last month or two - it was just too hot to be outside, except for watering a couple hours each morning. When I clean house or do anything, I do it with gusto. I try to do squats etc while doing other stuff like housework or putting dishes away, etc. . I have lost close to 60 pounds. Now that I have a good grip on my hunger - I no longer get so hungry that I want to chew my arm off - I am seeing some muscles re-appear again and I am trying to get back in the mind frame of regular structured exercise, but nothing too crazy overboard. I believe that nutrition is 1st, but I feel like exercise will help me with body composition and maybe some definition, maybe lift some areas but maybe not necessarily for weight loss per se. A little tabata (sprints) little strength training couple days a week, and either walking or elliptical most daily. Total 3 - 5 hours per week. It has been a process for me.
This is your journey. Take the wheel and drive!

I am still in the stage where I'm trying to incorporate more exercise into my daily routine. I was given an old elliptical machine that I keep near my living room TV next to some 5lb weights, so even when I don't have much time, I can do at least 15 minutes of exercise a day. I also walk around the parking lot at work during my breaks. I have a membership at the local YMCA for weekends and days off, too. It helps to have a buddy for the gym!

I have exercised all my life, on and off, starting when I was only 12 years old. My problem is I go off it for long periods of time. I hope spark's messages will get me to stay with it.

I started working out a few months before joining sparkpeople, was doing very well too @ 4-5 times a week for at least 30 minutes. I still work out but only 3 times a week @ 15 minutes each time and I work with a trainer 1x a week for the next few weeks til my session run out.

I started exercising around the same time I joined SP but I only worked out 10-15 minutes 3x-4x a week or so. Now, I average about one hour 4x-5x a week.

Well, depends on which date you chose. I first joined sometime last year, and well, I gained 30 pounds. Oops. Then a friend reminded me of this board, and I "rejoined" on the Sunday night. I have now been to the gym every day since then. Yay!

I mainly focused on dieting after joining. My daily walks with the dogs was my exercise. Through the tracker, I was able to see that I was losing weight but stalled for a while. I realized I had the food part under control but not the exercise! So I started timing my walks and am doing 18 minute mile walks with the doggies. Plus got out my ol' trusty walking tapes by Leslie Sansone. I got off my plateau, started losing weight and inches!

I was already exercising when I joined, although it had only been a few weeks back on track after many years of sedentary existence. I joined SP because I have a friend already on the site and we're using it as a way to be virtual gym pals and mutual support. I also have about 100 lbs to lose (of which I've lost 23 so far) and it find that the value in SP - for me - is that by tracking what I'm eating and doing for exercise, and when, I can see trends that are either working for me or hindering my progress. It's helping me to educate myself about my own habits and choices, and to act and choose mindfully rather than automatically, without thought.

It took me a while to start exercising. I hated look and sound of my fat jiggling around. After I lost a little bit of weight, I decided to reward myself by trying something new. I got some workout clothes that made me feel more confident. It took me three months to start exercising, but it made my journey so much better when I did. It took my focus off of loosing pounds, and it made me more aware of how I felt everyday.

Normally I give myself enough time to track and stop feeling starving pains or hunger grumpiness and then get back to work. I had to leave my old gym when I moved and just found a new one but they do not open until the 1st or 2nd week of Sept. So I just walk the dogs and play some WII right now. I will incorporate the gym as soon as it opens and already recruited a friend to work out with me some nights.

I started exercising the same day that I joined SparkPeople - just as soon as I looked around the site and discovered the chair exercises. That soon built up enough strength in the muscles around my knees that I could begin to do limiting walking for exercises. I can now walk for 45 or 50 minutes with a cane-everything I had hoped for and more. Thank you Coach Nicole, Chef Meg, fellow team members, and everything else that SparkPeople offers; to say nothing of all the encouragement from my family.

I joined almost a year ago and lost about 8kg in the first few months. I did do some exercise at the very start but that soon died out to an occasional workout. I then stayed at that weight for a couple of months (Christmas and overseas holiday) and when I resumed losing weight about six months ago I finally joined a gym and started attending group exercise classes regularly. I have been at the same weight for a few months again so I have gotten stricter with my food tracker so I'm back on track. Eating well is definitely the biggest part of losing weight for me (I can consume in 5 minutes what it takes an hour to burn if not careful!) but exercise does help and it is part of the healthy lifestyle I want for myself. March of 2004, I went to a dietitian appt., and came home, decided to give our exercise bike a try, although my husband had been using it for a long time, I never got on it. Got on, had to put a small pillow on the seat, because it hurt. Was on for 7 minutes. Next day, 10 min. twice, and next day 20 min. twice. Have been on the bike for at least 3 hours every day that we are home ever since. Not all at once, do 2 hours first, have breakfast and do chores, and then the other hour after I fix my husband's lunch. I have gone off and on my eating plan many times, but the bike time is what keeps me sane, and keeps me from gaining back all of the 82 pounds I lost in the first place. It is a must, and the bike sits in the living room, in front of the tv. Husband rides 4 hours a day. We are 65 and 66 years old. Do weights every other day or so, too. Habits take longer than 30 days to become habits though, life's circumstances play a larger part.

I started walking right away, and could only walk five minutes before starting to hurt. Worked up to 30 min. But it took me 43 days to begin to actually try an exercise. It's pretty hilarious to watch me try to do what the fit, slim, muscular demonstrator does. Really, I must take a video of me trying to do a squat-thrust-leg-spread-squat-jump. I do the squat. The thrust is more like sliding my legs backwards. Spread and back I can do, though the distance apart my feet get might make it hard to detect the spread. Jumping my legs back forward into the squat is stopped by my knees encountering my stomach, which touches the floor in the pushup position. From that point I have to just rise to my knees and knee-walk forward to where my squat should bring me. The jump is me laboriously working my way to standing up from my knees, and a feeble little twitch of a jump that just barely gets both feet a centemeter off the floor at once. Then I gasp for air for a minute or so before attempting a second parody of the exercise. Once I take the video I'll date it and when I can do a reasonable execution of the exercise, I'll tape that. Then when I can do it like the trainer, I'll tape that. All with dates, of course. (Do you see any "if"s here? No. No ifs. Only whens.)

I decided on my 45th birthday on the 7th of March that I needed to make a change! I was unhappily overweight, and extremely unfit. I could not keep up with my nine year old daughter when she would say after school each day "mum, race you to the car". I always was a spectator with her sport, taking her to swim lessons, soccer, tennis, hip hop and surf club. I was always giving her advice and encouragement. The week of my birthday I asked my nine year old for support. I said that I want to be fit and healthy like her, and she jumped with joy to hear those words. I bought a treadmill, as I had no confidence to join a gym let alone run in public. I began to research all I needed to know about exercise, and diet. I was so excited to see all the knowledge available at my fingertips to help guide and educate myself as I begin my journey. I then found this wonderful SparkPeople website. It had everything I needed, and more. I'm so grateful to be able to log in and get the motivation from reading your blogs. Exercises from Coach Nicole which I do everyday, and reading your informative articles. It's now August, I run 4 miles 5 days a week, do strength training every second day, and concentrate on Abs and Core to help strengthen my lower back. My diet is great now, lots more healthy vegetables and fruit, along with whole grains, yoghurt and protein. Potatoe chips are a thing of the past, and my family love the food I cook. My doctor was amazed at how low cholesterol was, and said my breathing and heart rate was similar to those who are extremely fit runners. Very different from a year ago suffering from pneumonia which took me 3 months to get better. I now race my nine year old to the car afterschool everyday now, with both of us laughing and giggling at the challenge.
