Deep breaths, change my focus to something more pleasant, spend time outside, exercise, listen to NPR, or take a nice bath.

I've learned to use exercise as a stress reliever, and oddly enough I now get upset when I can't do it. Couldn't run for months due to an injury and it drove me NUTS. Glad to be back on the road again!

Today I wanted to cry! I spent 1 1/2 HOURS looking for my vehicle keys so I could go to 2 different appointments that I MISSED. DH even came home from work to help. We went through everything as many as 4 times, grabbed flashlights and looked. DH found them in the chest freezer. (Must have dropped out when I put groceries away on Tues.) Argh!!!!!! When I was single I would go work out to exhaustion. Now, I work on praying. So often it is perspective that I'm in need of--His NOT mine.

I tend to find myself going to the gym when I'm stressed out. Jogging on the treadmill to my favourite upbeat music always makes me feel incredibly powerful. Walking or jogging outside is even better -- there's nothing like fresh air! I have a weekly "spa" day for myself, usually on a day where I don't have work or exercise scheduled. Nice bubble bath with relaxing music, use my favourite body scrubs, deep condition hair, pedicure/manicure/facial, etc. I make sure to clean my house really well the day before so that I don't feel ANY mental or physical clutter around me. Then just spend the day relaxing around my house. This is also a great time to catch up on a good book, practice guitar, or make some art.

I retreat to a quiet environment with little or no light. Sometimes I listen to beautiful, calming music (classical or nature sounds), sometimes I lay on my massage mat and practice deep breathing.

LOL!! Ok, I don't go into a yoga pose when they annoy me, but walking works. Anything physical to release the tension from my body. This last year has shown me just how much tension and pressure I hold inside, so that's a priority. Thanks for the laugh. Jae

It all depends on what is causing the stress, sometimes I take a "yoga moment". My kids always laugh at that one, but I tell you it often saves them from the wrath of the mother they made crazy. They tolerate the "tree" pose in public and even "warrier 1-2", but draw the line at "downward dog", which I have threatened to do often enough. Another great stress reliever is to go on a long walk/vent with my workout buddy, she has 6 kids, so believe me when I say this, those walks we take have prevented countless episodes of child abuse. I also love to read, which I do pretty much every night before bed just to unwind from the day. And last but not least I call in grandma and ship the kiddos off for some spoiling so I can hear myself think. And generally once I can hear that little voice in my head I can work out whatever is causing me to feel strung out.

Stress absolutely affects my focus on weight loss. I am an emotional eater and have been known to try to relieve stress with a big chocolate bar or bag of chips. I have slowly slowly (over the past seven years) gotten better at acknowledging things like "Stephanie, the only reason you want chocolate is because work was awful today." and instead exercising. Exercise is a phenomenal stress relief. Cardio kickboxing, yoga, weight lifting, running, swimming--- they are all incredibly stress relieving in their own ways. I also will allow myself to sit on the couch and "pig out" on a bowl of cherries/blackberries/strawberries and a 200 calorie cup of hot chocolate while watching some mindless tv. Sometimes that is what you need, too.
Exercise = Endorphins. Endorphins make you happy! Just because you don't see results after a day or even a week, don't give up. You may not see changes, but every smart choice you make is affecting you in ways you'd never imagine. (The same is true for every bad choice! Be careful.)

I work for social services, so I have a lot of stress to relieve. To make it through the rest of the work day if the morning has been tough, I listen to music (one earbud only -- I still have to answer the phone). After work, I hit up the gym and head straight for the punching bag. After about half an hour or so, I am dripping with sweat, sometimes tears, and feel so much better.

I think my way to the source, and make a plan to resolve whatever is causing the stress. For me, Stress usually comes when I don't initially see a resolution- be it too much to do in a day, or a situation that I created, or cannot control. My philosophy is that stress is a derivative of fear. Once there's nothing to be afraid of- by understanding it, facing it, or giving over to the existing circumstances- the stress dissipates.

I've found exercise of any form to be the best way of relieving stress - a long walk after work around my suburb if I've had a crap day, or a 30min walk/jog session on the treadmill if I'm feeling really bent out of shape.......somehow feel like afterwards all those stressful feelings have been cleaned out of my system somehow and life is put back into perspective.

Listen to music, mostly. Whether it's plugging in an old favorite and letting the association with better times sooth you, or letting something violent and funky jerk you out of your current headspace, there's stuff out there to fit/counteract/alleviate any mood.
