My husband (3 time marathon runner) says that the better shape you're in, the more you sweat. The sweat glands are more developed. I think he might have gotten that from Dr. George Sheehan. I know Dr. Sheehan said that sweat from running smells different than sweat from office stress. I think he's right about that. He didn't think sweat from running smelled offensive. I disagree.

I checked out the gym yesterday. It is very nice, and does not smell like sweat. Members have access 24/7. That's a good deal. The question now is, can we afford it?

I have always hated exercise so finding one I could enjoy was quite a task for me. I have enjoyed Leslie Sansone's Walk at Home DVDs because I can do it in the comfort of my own home and I don't get the junior high PE feeling. I have stuck with it for three years now. You MUST find what works for you. The word that got my attention is mindset. If we can get ahold of our mindsets there is nothing impossible for us, nothing at all. It is what we allow to grip our minds that controls all we do and say. It truly is a battle and the winner will detirmine our future. Good luck to you! Hope you find what works for you

If I don't enjoy the exercise I'm doing, it's impossible for me to think about anything except the numbers. I find that when I'm doing something I enjoy, I'm going to naturally increase the intensity on my own and be more consistent with it, regardless of the number at the end. I stopped running over the summer because it's too hot to do so outside. I tried running on a treadmill and I was going slower than normal and hating it the whole time. I switched to Zumba and I burn more calories because I'm having fun and pushing myself harder instead of waiting for my 30 minutes of running to end. I also remind myself that I exercise because I feel awesome when I do and it's essential for coping with the stress from my job. Losing weight is nice, but I've gained weight while running when I didn't watch what I was eating.

Hi: You were my confirmation - I love Zumba, and my secret dream is to become a licensed Zumba instructor. But I keep telling myself that I will never be strong enough to lead a class. Reading your post made me want to kick myself and say get on with you, you can do this! Thanks so much for sharing - I feel like crying, but it's happy, determined tears! Del

Thanks for all the suggestions. I am going to check out a gym I've never been to today. I'm not going to workout there. I want to see what it's like before I take the plunge. I've talked to several people who really like it. For the time being I'm sticking to making myself do the physical therapy exercises the doctor gave me (resistance bands) once a week. Even once a week I feel better. The isometric exercises are just SO boring.

Is there a pool you can get to? One of the things I like about swimming is you don't know you're sweating. It comes off in the water. It's easy on your joints. I also liked Leslie Samsone's "Walk Away the Pounds" DVD. There's a 1, 2, and 3 mile walk. I don't care for the new one she has out. It is just too fast paced for me, and I hurt at the end of two miles. Back to the pool - You might see if your pool offers water aerobics or an arthritic class. I joined the latter for six weeks while I was waiting for my knee to heal. It was ideal for the problem I had, and wow, did I ever catch up on all the news in town....Classes can be a good social outlet.

When I sit and think about how putting this thing off just turns into year after year...I have to do something now. I would often run into people who got serious about their health six months ago...wow, that could've been me; they look great. I finally made myself a project. This has do be done, now, no matter how many times I keep messing up, I've got to work towards improvement. I would rather leave this earth having tried than having given up. After two years, I am 60 pounds lighter, off of blood pressure medicine, able to shop in the regular sizes, and a licensed Zumba instructor. I feel better at 47 than I did 20 years ago. And I keep making new goals. People come to me for advice and encouragement now. I still have a little ways to go, but I'm far better along than I was before. Set your mind to it and take small, consistent steps. You'll be there in no time. And hang around with people who set and are meeting health goals.

Sweating isn't my favorite thing about weight bearing exercise either, but I am coming to think of it as an indicator of how hard I am working. Does anyone have a solution to being grossed out by sweating when you're lifting weights at the gym? I don't like struggling with the weight and having sweat drip in my eyes, but what grosses me out more is OTHER people's sweat on the equipment. Some weight rooms have a smell about them I just don't like. Strength training is my least favorite exercise. I need to overcome my hangup with it so that I'm more likely to get out the door and go.

Sweat? Man, I'm a walking rain forest! Have been a heavy sweater since birth. My mother said the first time she saw me after I was born, I had beads of sweat on my nose. My hysterectomy at age 38 meant instant menopause, so the sweating increased. I can relate to those of you with hot flashes. My sweat bothers me when other people act grossed out by it, like if I hug them and I'm all sweaty. They have to wipe off their cheek from MY sweat on it. That's embarrassing. But I figured out that sweating in the gym looks really cool and nobody faults me for it. So I guess that means I need to spend lots of my time at the gym, right?! I've heard it said that sweat is our fat crying. I've also heard mentioned the term "hydrated fat". So maybe sweating from hard exercise really is our hydrated fat crying. A Chinese medicine doctor told me people who sweat a lot are healthier as their bodies aren't retaining as many toxins as non-sweaters. Hope any of these thoughts might help someone accept themselves a bit more as sweaty people.

I always wear moisture-wicking clothes. I can sweat just going down to my basement to do laundry! Maybe it's menoapuse (I'm 54). I get a depo shot, so I don't know if I'm in menopause or not. I just know it rolls down my neck and chest, face and upper lip, and down my back and butt! I hate it! Today it's almost 90 here and no way am I going for a walk or bike ride. My gym card hasn't come yet - thougth sure it would, or I would have gone there this afternoon. Thank good ness they have a shower!

I don't care much for sweating either - but I do know that if I am sweating, I'm really working hard and in the long run, I'm going to lose the weight I want to lose. I read a motivation things a while back - I think someone posted that it was hanging in their gym: Sweat is fat crying. Helps to put it into perspective. I also use my workouts as an "excuse" to take a long shower afterwards. Its one of my rewards for working out (as opposed to taking a quite shower).

I read on here where people like to sweat. I hate it! Just doing Wii Fit for 15 min, I had sweat running down my cleavage, my back, my face. It's very uncomfortable for me. How do you learn to like to sweat? I just sent for a month trial gym membership, and I worry how much I will sweat. I weigh about 189 - I don't think I sweated this much when I weight 290! Good for all you who keep the healthy mindset and have great attitudes!

THINSTEAD--very good synopsis! I use to hate sweating--go figure! How can you lose weight and hate to sweat? So I went and purchased the appropriate work out gear which does help. Do I sweat, of course, but I look good doing it and it makes me feel better. Another obstacle I can check off the list. My list is getting shorter and shorter. Exercise is non-negotiable! Another sparker said it should be treated like hygiene (I luv that). KEEP SPARKIN!!

Well said Thingstead!!! You hit the nail right ont he head. I am 110% in agreement with all you said. We must change our mindset and uproot all the erroneous beliefs we have about exercise and how we eat. once we do that we will be able to lose the weight permanently. I making those changes right now!!! I'm done with dealing with food and weight issues!

The way I see it, there are two aspects to weight loss. Food/diet and exercise. For people struggling with weight issues, chances are pretty good you would rather eat cake than do aerobics. I know that's the way I was. So I decided I had to want cake less, and exercise more. I had to learn to love myself enough to want to nourish and nurture my body and improve my health. Nothing is going to change if we continue to think the same way about ourselves and our weight. For me, that meant I needed to examine what food meant to me. In my case, it meant love and comfort and pleasure. I had to find the reasons for my love for food, and translate that into love for myself. I had to find ways to find pleasure and to reward myself other than food. I also had to examine my dislike for exercise. I found I had a dislike for sweating, huffing and puffing, and a fear of being seen exercising. I had to root out these fears and aversions and reframe the idea of exercising as something I did FOR myself and my body temple. I took a look back into my childhood and saw how food represented love and reward growing up. I also used energy psychology techniques to release my food addictions and remove residual negative feelings left over from my childhood. They were very effective at knocking out my emotional eating and binge behavior, because I was no longer trying to "stuff" my feelings. If you dig deep, you can begin to change the way you look at food and exercise and start to lose weight faster and permanently.

In my opinion, moving is moving. If you're doing 45 min of elliptical one day which burns a lot of calories if you're swinging your arms too and another day, you're "just walking", you're still burning calories. Maybe you need to eat one less piece of fruit or something to make up for the difference. You're not looking for a number of calories burned by exercise, you're looking for a negative calorie intake for the day. That's the math of losing weight....burn more than you consume. I missed who said it in the thread, but I do believe elliptical burns more calories than other machines ....if you're swinging your arms...some ellipicals have stationary holds for you to also hold onto...I sure feel more wiped out after 30 min of elliptical than 30 min of anything else on the machines.

even though i have gained and lost over 125 pounds up and down like a yoyo over the past 6 years, i really feel like this time it is very different for me. and the main reason is that i have finally found the right mindset, so different from my usual "all or nothing" mentality. in the past when i was good, i didn't allow myself any treats, or any going over my calories, because i always felt like one would lead to my undoing (and it did, EVERY time). but i finally feel like this is a lifestyle change, one that i can maintain, where there will be good and bad days, but as long as i keep eating well most of the time, and exercising regularly i will be a healthier, happier person!

There is a sign hanging in the gym I go to and I read it every time I walk in... It says " You can either throw in the towel...or...use it to wipe up your sweat." I find that so motivating and for some reason it puts my game face on, when I am working out I look so serious but I found my mindset changed when I realized that when I walked out of the gym soaked in sweat I walked taller and felt sexier.

I agree. Do whatever makes you happy. Do what puts a smile on your face. For me that is dancing. I feel alive and sexy when I dance...despite if I am doing it right or not. I love Zumba and other types of cardio dance. I also like yoga because it allows me to impress myself with my flexibility and be quiet for a second. In my world, that is worth a million bucks.

Find other things that you enjoy!! When I started trying to fit in a variety of workouts, I found that I really enjoyed cardio dance (using DVDs--which I got cheap on amazon), cardio kickboxing (Coach Nicole's 10-minute video on the site is SO great--and her DVD is awesome, too)... The best part about experimenting is you can generally find all kinds of workout DVDs at the library (or online through InterLibrary loan), and even if you try it and don't like it, you've worked out--you've tried something different, and you've burned calories doing it!

I also need to change it up more often. I love to ride my bike, I love to walk but I can't do elliptical as it bothers my knees. i hate to strength train, but I'm going to look at a gym and try a week membership to see if I'll stick with it, especially when cold weather comes. I've read on this site that you should do both - cardio and ST, so I'm going to see if i can like ST as much as my cardio. After a 45 min walk, then 20 min ride this moring - I felt sooo good. Maybe the strength training will feel that way too.

@ANNIESHAN - I'm sorry people haven't been responding to your original question. Its great that you are getting out there on the elliptical, and I know exactly what you mean about sticking with the 1 thing. I do the same thing, but with Zumba. I know that I would benefit from adding variety, but I burn so many calories at Zumba (I use a HR monitor), that everything else seems kinda "blah". And from your original post, that's your issue to. You know you should change it up, but it boils down to the fact that you enjoy the elliptical over other activities. As I mention - I struggle with this too. And really the only way around it is to try other things until you find something else that you enjoy doing. If you enjoy doing it, even if it burns fewer calories, you'll want to do it. If you don't enjoy it, you won't. I get some biking in, because its one of my modes of transportation. I don't particularly enjoy it, but since I have to do it, I know that I'm getting some other exercise in. HTH! And good luck!

There's a great motivational blogger here on SP- she's often featured, but I feel bad because I can't remember her name. Anyway, she has lost so much weight and done it with all kinds of obstacles. I wrote down one her quotes: "Dress the part, act the part, suck it up." I just really liked it because in the past I spent a lot of time feeling deprived and not having the motivation. This time though I started with the exercise and made it really positive and I'm having wonderful results. I have a long way to go, but when I feel a little discouraged, I think of her quote, and I just "suck it up"!
Today I commit myself to health and well-being.

Thank you. This is what I am thinking about today & wanted to share. I am the one that has to change. I guess that I am realizing that making a lifestyle change means I am going to have to learn to consistently make the right food choices in "bad" situations. I only have control over my own behavior & nobody can make the right choices for me. The motivation, consistency & good choices will not come from the outside. They can only come from the inside.

I have some good quotes that I keep in mind. "Don't beat yourself up. Put on your big girl pants & do better." "Someday is not a day of the week." "It is easier to stay on the wagon than to get back on once you have jumped off." "Giving up on a lifestyle change because of bad choice(s) is like getting a flat tire then running around the car popping all the other tires (out of frustration). It keeps you from getting to your destination for a longer period of time & makes more problems to deal with."

there was a quote from Suzanne Powter that I really like: motivation comes from doing. like: even if you do 5 minutes, that will motivate you to do more. No one ever does a bit of exercise and says: gee I wish I hadn't done that! So if we wait around to feel motivated to something, that may never come... but once we do something we are more likely to do it again cuz we are motivated... ya know? good luck! (as for treadmill: I put a mirror on the wall it was facing and tilted it a bit so I could watch tv while walking: that helped a lot!) feel better!

I am trying this time to make things as 'fearless' as possible. I'm not afraid of doing too many reps of what ever exercise I'm doing this week for example... I'm trying to see things as good, better and 'not so good' instead of hardline, black and white 'right' or 'wrong'. At the end of the day, I ask myself questions like: If I ate like this all the time would it add up to a healthy life/body? Yes! Does it mean that I'm pushing myself to lose all the weight right NOW! Maybe, maybe not, but what ever happens, it will take time! it's cumulative and there will be ups and downs. if I eat more than I should or just things that have no nutritional value, etc. I try to look at the bigger picture: do I do that often? No!... in the big scheme of things, does this day fit into a lifetime of better days? Yes! Is doing any type of movement better than no movement? Yes! I like numbers and the scale and charting miles walked and steps and all that, but really, at the end of the day: if I moved my body and ate within my range (or even near it! cuz to get to this weight, I was overeating A LOT) this will add up to a healthier me: I can feel it! And the feeling is what I love!
