A half order! I ask them to "box half" BEFORE it comes to the table. Then I know whatever I eat is not only half the calories (some restaurants indicate calories) but half the amount.

I love the the polo loco at the local mexican restraunt-it has refried beans, spanish rice, grilled chicken, and then a cheese sauce poured over it. I watch what I eat during the day so I can have this.

I think "grocery store" rather than "drive-through". Both can be fast. The grocery store near me which is owned by Safeway offers "made-while-you-watch" sandwiches that they offer as wraps also. A half a wrap is enough for me, along with a salad from their deli or fruit from the produce department.

I downloaded the Calorie Counter from the Android Market for my mobile phone. It lists calorie information for most foods, restaurants and chains, supermarket brands, etc. This really helps me when I am out and thinking about where to have lunch.

Subway is all I can find for lunch options. I hope I don't get burned out. Dinner I have resorted to printing out nutritional info on all surround resturants and keeping them with me to decide before I go in. No tempting menus to look at that way. Breakfast is still an issue - only Bob Evans and IHOP offer a low cal menu with calories listed right on them. Need more breakfast options for sure. Always on the road so cooking is not possible. emoticon

QT has great salads and fresh sandwichs that are much better for you than the corn dog. Sounds like you are fighting the sugar/salt craving that is so common in fast food junkies. (donunt/corn dog) Once you kick the salt habit and watch the sugars, food will start tasting great again, and you will crave the freshness of a food over the sugar/salt buzz. Keep asking yourself if you have made the right choices and Keep the food Journal. In no time at all you will be Rocking in a new Bod! emoticon

Almost all of the chains carry some form of chicken snack wrap. I always get a grilled chicken snack wrap, no sauce, and a side of whatever apple slices they have. Way to pack in some protein and fiber, even at a fast food joint.

Thanks for the Taco Bell fresco suggestions!

Due to some massive schedule upheaval, we got dinner on the run today, and went with Taco Bell. The fresco menu had the calories and fat grams listed, so I was able to pick stuff that fit in my calorie range. Yum! I'm sure that the sodium was out of this world, but in a pinch, it was better than other options!

I also like kid's menus. Even though I'm older than 12, I can often get one anyway since my DH orders a grown-up entree. LOL!!

At Wendy's I usually get one of the salads - I think it's the mandarin chicken salad? I don't eat the noodles or the dressing so it's not bad at all.

Subway - I get an oven-roasted chicken breat 6" sandwich with cheese, lettuce and cucumber - yummy!

In addition to the calories, the salt content of fast foods is always a problem for me. So for me it is a baked potato with chives at Wendy's with the low fat sour cream. At McDonalds its the 4 piece chicken nuggets (depending on my calories for the day I might have 8 nuggets) and at Friendly's it's one-half of the grilled chicken wrap with brocolli on the side. And of course NO fries.

Like many others, my favorite fast food lunch is a Subway turkey on wheat with lots of veggies and mustard.

At Taco Bell, I get a burrito supreme minus the sour cream (or a bean burrito plus lettuce & tomato), with a side of beans (no cheese).

If I know I'm going to be going to a fast food restaurant, I try to take along a veggie or fruit to add to the meal--an apple or baby carrots. Less expensive and more healthy than most of the sides available.

KFC-chicken breast, no skin or breading, green beans and corn on the cob.

BK-Whopper Jr. no mayo, small onion rings and Diet Coke.

I try to avoid the traditional fast food places though prefer Subway.

Love Subway Turkey on wheat with pepperjack cheese and loads of veggies.

At Wendy's love the chili and the ceasar side salad with no crutons or dressing.

Wendys, it's the chili and a side salad with no dressing

Mcdonalds it's the grilled chicken salad without the sauce on the chicken and no tortilla strips or dressing

Burger King it's either a salad with grilled chicken and no dressing or the tendergrill sandwich with only one side of the bun. (no Mayo)

Subway it's the 6" turkey sub with lettuce, tomato, onions and mustard on wheat bread

But my favorite is El Pollo loco's chicken tostada, NO shell, or cheese or sour cream, or dressing. This is so yummy and they have all those great salsas you can add. It's filling and delicious and not many calories at all.

At Wendy's it's either the Asian Chicken Salad without the crunchy noodles and with only about 1/3 of the dressing or a plain baked potato with a small chili; I chop up the potato and dump the chili over it - I know this is high in carb's but sometimes I need that. Anywhere else it's a veggie burger (not sure you can get these everywhere) or a grilled chicken sandwich on a whole wheat bun (if they have them) with mustard, tomato and lettuce.

Any grilled chicken sandwich w/ mustard instead of mayo. Or chicken soft tacos fresco style from Taco Bell. Lately it has been the $1 Deluxe Roast Beef sandwich from Arby's without the mayo.

burger king whopper jr. even with the mayo it is about the best choice. you can get a small onion rings with it for less than 500 cals. High in the fat so it is obviously not the healthiest option, but if you love burgers (and something cheap)it's awesome.

I can always go for a Moe's "personal trainer" salad! I get romaine lettuce, black beans, NO cheese, in a bowl rather than a fried shell, black olives, cucumber, pico de gallo, and the vinegarette dressing.... Add some corn salsa if I'm feeling spunky! Around 350 calories and ooohhhhh so good and filling!!!

I got an app for my iPhone that lists the nutritional info for several menu items from many common fast-food restaurants. So I look up the restaurant and decide what will fit into my day.

At burger places, a small plain hamburger is usually a good choice, with a small side salad instead of fries (hold the cheese, bacon bits, ranch dressing...)

I try to carry good stuff. Roasted, unsalted almonds and apples. At McD's- 2 yogurt parfaits & a bag of apples with unsweetened ice tea is a meal. At Wendys, a small chili, if I am really hungry I add a side salad and I use only a tiny bit of dressing also with UNSW ice tea. My fav. is Eat n Park -grilled salmon and steamed broccoli. In season, I may add a baked sweet potato with butter on the side. My most common beverage is ice water with lemon. My big treat is a fajita and I don't eat the tortilla wraps. Just the meat & grilled veggies & lettuce & pico de gallo. Skip the sour cream and use a little guacamole. Maybe once a month or every two months.

Wendys would be the small chili with no cheese. I don't eat the saltines and I get a water.

McDonalds would be a six piece chicken nuggets with sauce and water

Burger King- nada, I just can't find anything there.

I usually think of fast food meals as "enough to get me home," and choose something small. To be honest fast food still frightens me.

Last night I took my son on a day trip and we wondered around Indianapolis. I stopped and had a bowl from Qdobah- back beans, peppers, squash, zuccini, salsa verde, and very light rice. So yummy and under 500 calories.
I also love similar meals from Chipoltle, veggie subs from Subway, and a small Bangcock Curry with tofu from Noodles and Co.

At a fast food restaurant my go-to meal is iced tea.

Same amount of time spent at the grocery store deli counter getting two slices of roast beef and wrap it around pickles or red roasted peppers, a piece of fruit from the produce stand, a carton of skim milk or fat free plain yogurt.

My go to meal at Wendy's is the chili and a salad, no dressing.
I want to know why you HAVE to eat at the fast food place? Often, you can run in a grocery store and grab some fruit and a cheese stick or prepped salad things and yogurt or something almost as quickly as "fast food" and it's such a better option! Believe me, I understand being pressed for time, but see if there is another viable option.

Hangin' in there!

It's Wendy's Mandarin Chicken Salad with dressing on the side. Only use half. For a change of pace, Arby's Market Fresh turkey and swiss sandwich. Only eat one slice of the bread. I cut the sandwich in quarters then dissect away! Very tasty, and usually I end up taking half of it home with me.

Has anyone tried the egg white breakfast sandwiches at Dunkin Doughnuts?

I always get a BK tendergrill w/o mayo (360 Cals 5g fat)

McD's BBQ grilled chic wrap with no cheese (the kids behind the counter always load it on... I'm sure the portion is way over specs so I leave it off.)

Tim Hortons yogurt and berries parfait is only 100 calories.

And the steak soft shell taco al fresco at Taco bell is lower calories than the chicken one. (128 verse 135). Again I leave off the cheese to counter act what seems to be an over portion problem on the meat end.

I DO NOT eat at 98% of fast food restaurants. Besides the gross faux food, I'm a vegetarian, so most won't work. BUT if I'm in a hurry, I will stop by Subway and get the Veggie Delite Sub on 9-Grain Wheat. Since I don't use mayonaise, oil, or cheese, it's only 230 calories and I can pile on the veggie =) Filling, fast, and healthy =)

I try to avoid fast food by packing bags of cut up fruits, veggies, trail mix for the car when running kids from here to there. But when I'm not prepared, a Chic-fil-A grilled chicken sandwich on wheat, no butter sandwich is very tasty, or a salad with fat free dressing on the side, no croutons or cheese. Yum!

I also try to avoid fast food by being proactive: I always have a piece of fruit and a serving of raw almonds in my purse and I make sure to pack my lunch unless I know I will be near to a grocery store with a good salad bar.

If I do eat fast food, I like Chipotle's salad. I only do lettuce, chicken, guac, green and red salsa. And, I only use small amounts of the vinaigrette (even though it is BOMB!!) Without the dressing, the calorie count is around 600; with the entire serving of dressing it is around 750. I usually only eat 1/2 for lunch and then I'm full so I can also eat it for dinner. YUMMY

Also, for Chinese food I like Sezchuan (sp?) chicken with NO rice. There is only 250 calories in a cup!

I also eat off of the kids menu (for fast food). I have always done this because otherwise I throw 1/2 the meal away and I drink way more soda than I need!

I love the idea of the kids menu, but in our area most restaurants will not let adults order off the kids menu. I have tried for years.

I avoid fast food restaurants like the plague. I always always carry fruits or veggies in baggies everywhere I go. But if I had to get something fast it would be Subway - just plain meatballs, turkey or their soup. I totally leave the bread off my plate.

My only real rules are that I get what I feel like... I always figure it into my daily stats... and I always get something that I don't make at home for myself all the time.

I know some people out there don't have a choice and have to eat there much more often, and if I had that conundrum I would probably be more restrictive with my choices.

My favorite on the run fast food meal is a small chili with a sour cream and chive potato from Wendys or a fresco soft taco from Taco Bell. My once a week treat is a Chick-fil-A sandwich with no butter.

Subway is the only fast food I do nowadays! With the variety of choices I find I do not miss the other fast food chains. I like their breakfast sandwiches but actually save time by making my own at home. For lunch usually a Turkey on Wheat with veggies, oil and vinegar; Baked Lays potato chips: and a Diet soda.

Subway, Subway, Subway to boot!!! I get a 6" wheat, turkey, no cheese, all the veggies, and a touch of oil with lots of vinegar. I find on the nutrition tracker that I save a lot of calories by skipping the cheese and, as much as I love cheese, I really don't miss it on this sandwich.

Subway is always my first choice for fast food... I love a veggie delight with as many veggies as I can fit in that whole wheat bread...if not a veggie then the sweet onion chicken ~ very tasty!

Otherwise I've had a grilled McChicken sandwich with no mayo & double veggies from McDonalds too and that is a very nice sandwich.

I loved this topic. I try not to eat much fast food, but I do like Subway's fresh veggies once in a while and my one real guilty pleasure is a McDouble. I figue them into my plan once ina while so that I don't feel deprived. I also love Wendy's small chili and sour cream and chive potato... and now their new pecan and blue cheese salad.Yuuuuummm! I am going to figure one of those in about once a week..Hope they keep it a while. I love the spark people set up. It is so easy to figure all of these things in.

Because I only eat there a couple times a week, I just get whatever I want and account for it in my journal. That way, I don't get any real bad cravings, I get to have what I want and I don't feel short-changed.

But I don't go buck-wild or anything. I eat what I feel like having. I like to get the kids meal a lot, it makes me feel petite eating such small foods hahaha.

Just discovered this a few weeks ago ...
McDonald's - grilled chicken breast patty ... no bread or anything ... just the chicken (depending on where you are it's only $1 or so) and a side salad (again only $1) with the balsamic vinaigrette. Only 180 calories, 5 fat, 10 carbs, and 25 protein. If I'm really hungry, maybe I'll double it. I used to get one of their bigger salads but I don't need the bacon or croutons or other extras that come with those (plus the extra cost).
