AMEN To your statements... Wife runs a small health food store in our town and she said, every week people come in wanting all this stuff Dr OZ talks about.. She tries to tell them there is no magic bullet or pill for anything... You just have to work on it, and learn to eat proportionately...
enjoyed your read... PB

I have a co-worker who religiously follows Dr. Oz's advice. She spends a lot of money sending off for weird supplements and teas and concentrates. She never really loses any weight. She has some very serious medical problems and has to take a lot of steroids, which make it very difficult for her to lose weight. She's also single and trying to help out some grown kids financially, so it seems especially tragic that this show preys on her. I guess you could blame Dr. Oz for duping her into all this stuff, but when you try to talk to her about basic nutrition and safe weight loss, her eyes glaze over and she goes back to talking about Dr. Oz. I guess a fool and her money are soon parted.

There are certain topics he speaks on that interest me but I am not much a fan of all the vitamins he pushes. I thought we were supposed to use fruits and veggies to hlep aid in the vitamins and minerals we need to stay healthy.

I used to really like and enjoy watching him when he first started appearing on Oprah's show... but I kind of lost interest when he started his TV show. You watch that show daily and you can turn into a complete worry wart and start believing you have all these things wrong with you when you really don't!

Earlier this year I had surgery and was laid up on the couch for two weeks, meaning the TV was my enterainment when I got tired of reading, which always seemed to be mid afternoon - right in time to watch Dr. Oz. I was actually excited to get a chance to see his show, as I had DVR'd a few in the past about certian timely topics. I caught on quickly that every single day he had a new weight loss miracle to sell us. As anyone on this site knows, there are NO miracles. Weight loss comes with a lifestyle change and hard work. Not a pill in a bottle. I found it patronizing. I believe he has a great opportunity to help America, unfortunaly he is using it to create the longest running infomercial ever.

I think Dr. Oz. is nothing but a high-paid peddler who has sold his soul the devil. What I really hate is when he promotes products he admits he's very skeptical about. Or when he promotes different products everyday for the same conditions. Sometimes I get sucked in, and think, "WOW! Maybe I'll try that wonder cure for whatever." Then, I remember, I've tried it, thanks to Oz, and it didn't do a darn thing.

I can't bare to watch him anymore.

I just had the new McDonald's Cheeseburger Happy Meal this week. I didn't even know they HAD a new happy meal. It comes in at 520 calories and 920 mg sodium (38% daily value). I haven't had a Happy Meal in a long time - this was my treat of the week (bonus points on WW). What really surprised me was how small the meal is - an average McD's hamburger, with a tiny serving of fries. Really looks like it can fit into little hands! They also include low-fat milk and fresh apple slices. I was happy with my Happy Meal. Not something I'd do every day, but for me, it was a treat.

I found the same to be true about some of those veggie burgers, crumbles, etc, sold in stores, high in sodium. Read the labels.

I imagine he chose that particular item in part due to the lower fat content. I don't mind the Morning Staff stuff, although I like the pseudo chicken pattie the best. Guess ya just better plan for the sodium, if you eat these items...and, ya better check out any restaurant's nutrition info before you eat there...there's sodium in so many things it boggles the mind,,..emoticon

At one time I loved to watch his show but now every single day he talks about a different product to take, a different supplement, vitamins etc etc

If we take all the stuff he tells us too it would cost so much money.

He talks about herbs, natural foods, fake foods, and then there was the apple juice scare.

I don't know what to believe anymore so I stopped watching. Sad because I loved the show but can no longer find him someone I can trust.

I agree that if we followed all of his advice we'd be poor and still wouldn't lose weight. If people followed his advice and lost weight and got healthier no one would tune in to his show anymore.

Can you imagine if someone actually thought you should take all those supplements he keeps endorsing?? How can he keep suggesting so many different things without telling people to be careful of interaction.
How can we tell which ones are better than others?
I gave up on that show. I think it's harmful.

He was probably just saying that if you feel that you must eat at a fast food restaurant then opt for the veggie burger over the triple heart attack. I dont think he was saying it is the healthiest or the most ideal meal, but certainly better then the hamburgers. I have a brother who is really obese and all he eats are hamburgers from fast food restaurants but if he would start substituting those for veggie burgers it would be wonderful.

nutritiondata.self.com gives information about burgers - all kinds - so:

Burger King Veggie Burger without mayonnaise:
calories: 310
Total Fat: 7 g
Sat Fat: 1 g
trans fat: 0 (which is what gets reported, although 0.1 g is more accurately stated)
cholesterol: 0
Sodium: 890 mg (37% daily value)
Carb: 46 g
Fiber: 4 g.
Sugars:7 g.
Protein:15 g.
vitamin A 10%
vitamin C 6%
calcium 8%
iron 35%

(take into account that this is based on a 2000 calorie/day diet, and most dieters go below that as a limit...so the sodium would be a higher percentage of daily value allowed. However, this applies for all nutritional reporting) This is for one serving,175 g. '

A Burger King hamburger has 310 calories (same as BK veggie burger) and it weighs less so may be smaller. A serving size is 121 g.
It has:
Total fat: 13 g.
sat fat: 5 g
trans fat: 0 g (which is what gets reported, although 0.5 g is more accurately stated)
cholesterol:40 mg
sodium: 580 mg (24% on a 2,000/day diet)
carb: 31 g
fiber: 2 g
sugar: 6 g
protein: 17 g
vitamin A:2%
vitamin C:2%
calcium: 8%
iron: 20 %

The veggie burger is heavier and has more fiber. Otherwise, not such dramatic differences, unless you care about saturated fat and cholesterol, or even trans fat numbers. Useful for vegetarians (although not vegans) to have the option. When it's just the standard BK veggie burger, ~with~ mayonnaise, then the sodium DOES go up substantially, and I don't think they change the type of bun used.

Interesting that McDonald's hamburger (which comes with ketchup and mustard, I think), comes in with lower (than BK burger) values:
size (105 g),
calories (280),
total fat (10 g),
sat fat (4 g),
trans fat (0 g) (negligible),
cholesterol (30 mg),
sodium (560 mg) (23% on a 2,000/day diet),
carb (35 g),
fiber (2 g),
sugars (7 g),
protein (12 g).
Vitamin A (0%),
vitamin C (4%),
calcium (20%),
iron (15%).

I think I'd go for the BK veggie burger with mayo, just because it would taste better - and at home, I would use a variety of Morningstar veggie burgers and a variety of toppings, so there I have more flexibility. To me, the McDonald's hambuger is tasty but I finish it in just a few bites! And I like fiber - for me, it makes all the difference as far as satiety (feeling full).

Lots of information about fast food (it has its own category) on nutritiondata.self.com. I used that website long before it was acquired by Self magazine. I haven't noticed any big changes to the way the database is designed and operates since that acquisition.

What this enforces for me is: portion size matters. How does what you choose fit in with other choices? I like Lean Cuisines and frozen meals when I start thinking calories don't count. They come in around a third of the daily sodium allowance - which doesn't bother me if I'm just eating 3 frozen meals in one day and not snacking or adding to those meals. It's not an ideal diet but it is premeasured stuff and I lose weight. Any supplemental meal works the same for me if I count the calories as reported on the box.

Algebragirl - While I agree with you in many points, the original poster was just stressing the vast amount of sodium contained in the meal.

Now, I'm sure that some of that comes from the bun, and possibly (if included) pickles.

I'm finding that many processed foods, including the veggie ones that I've chosen in the past, also contain a high amount of salt. I wish it were not so, though.

Can't believe how much sodium! If I took all the supplements suggested by Dr. Oz, I'd weigh at least twice as much as I do now and spend all day taking them.

"Hey, for the typical daytime TV audience, that is an improvement."

That's kind of a nasty, broad overstatement. I'm not home during the day, so it doesn't apply to me, but it feels malicious. I have several SAHM friends, who may possibly tune into daytime TV during naptime or whatever, who I'm pretty sure aren't eating crappy fast food every day.

I haven't seen Dr. Oz's show. I googled the BK veggie burger and found out it's a Morningstar brand veggie burger - which is fine, in my opinion. If I absolutely can't resist stopping at a fast food place, I'll go to BK, then!

I already eat morningstar veggie burgers and lots of other substitutes that taste like meat. They are lots less points plus on the Weight Watchers plan, it turns out. Last night, I tried a new brand of burger that is just eggplant. Very tasty - tonight, I will have the same burger without the bun because it tasted THAT good. There are excellent tasting vegetarian options out there in the supermarket - I can easily overeat Quorn 'chicken patties.'

And here's the thing: I'm not a vegetarian. I told myself that if I craved a real burger, I'd splurge using my bonus points. It hasn't happened yet - I really like the veggie burgers on a 'light' hamburger bun (which has 4 grams of fiber, and the veggie burger also has fiber) with ketchup, mustard, lettuce and pickle.

Don't know about Dr. Oz, but the burgers are delicious. If you try one, cook exactly the time recommended for the microwave. It's a very easy meal to prepare, and quick. If you add in baked sweet potato fries, you get even more fiber. Fiber is very filling.

My sister is a cardiothoracic surgeon, just like Dr Oz. I asked her what she thought of him. She said he's a good salesman, but I wouldn't let him operate on my kid.

The sponsors and the producers don't care about his advice being unsafe... all they care about are the sweet, sweet dollars he brings in. His sponsors are the ones who are responsible. How much would you bet that BK paid him for that spot?

Thanx for the input!! I'm not one to run and do something just because I hear or see it on TV, but I should have know that a surgeon really is out of his realm... I'm surprised that the sponsors or the producer aren't down on him. Dr. Oz is a quack. He is paid to promote the things he does, and does not responsibly share all the facts. If there's even the slightest positive effect, he'll promote it... even if there's no compelling evidence or the studies being cited aren't properly constructed.

He's not a good source for much advice about anything. I don't trust him, and he's little more than a highly paid snake oil salesman.

Seriously, actual quote I heard on his show: "This supplement is all natural, which means it's total safe and has no side effects."

That alone is irresponsible. Natural means no such thing. Snake venom's as natural as it gets, and it'll kill you.
