I bought a Thule 916XTR T2 platform hitch rack. The big advantages are that this Thule rack has built-in locks, is a breeze to use, can carry any bike including dual suspension mountain bikes, does not scratch the bike and looks really cool. The downside is that it costs about $400!

What sold me on this rack was that it could carry bikes with large diameter wheel and swoopy frames. I can also remove any bike in any order. This rack can be expanded to hold 4 bikes.

We got my daughter a Swagman hanging rack that was self locking.

We paid about $80 for this rack. She has a bike that can hang from a rack. The disadvantage of this rack is that it takes some time to screw the knobs down. This rack works well for certain bike.

I hope you can find something that works for you. Thule and Yakima make really good bike racks.

I have a Yakima Roc 2 hitch rack and it has a built in lock that I purchased in the late 90's. Great system that has never let me down. Thule also makes great racks. I've sold both Yakima and Thule racks in the day and both are great. Lately I've also heard good things about Hollywood hitch racks but I have no direct experience with them.
Even locked I like to keep an eye on the bikes. Being locked doesn't keep people from messing with or vandalizing your bikes and if they have tools they could abscond with expensive parts.

I have had this one for several years. It holds 4 bikes and has lock for security. They come in models to hold 2 bikes as well. However, you would still need to lock your wheels with a cable if you're going to leave it unattended.

I bought this one over a year ago and love it. It holds two bikes very securely and is super easy to use. There is a space for padlocks to secure the top things so that no one can steal your bike.

I need recommendations for a bike rack to haul at least 2 bikes. The local ones at the bike shops tilt down, lock in the hitch, but just hook the bikes in place. You have to use a separate chain to lock them on. I would like something if I travel and wish to go in to eat, that I don't have to watch the SUV/rack. Better yet, if it is unattended in our employee parking garage all day, I would like to know if is safe.
