Hi all!!

Quierra, it may be time for you to do a couple of things. One of them is to look at both your diet and your exercise and make sure that you are not in a rut in either category. Add in some new foods, change when you eat a bit, and maybe even measure in case you are drifting in your ability to "eyeball" what a half cup or cup looks like. Exercise routines need to be varied and mixed up as well--and this is the time of the year when you can try lots of new and interesting activities out in the fresh air. Sometimes mising it up and checking up on ourselves can break through a plateau.

John, one thing that my years here at SP has taught me is that it is hard to figure out how many people might actually report on their team goals. I thought that having to dedicate the numbers would be easy at first and having to take on a goal would make a link between team members and those goals, but it isn't always so. I think I;'ll send out a spark mail to team members to try and get a count of who all is using our team page.

Sorry that I have been so MIA lately. My past couple of blogs share my story with the burning issue divided between a malfunction in my right hip and the retirement of my pastor and close personal friend of the past 21 years. My renewed thinking about friendship is that we can never take them for granted, be them here in cyberspace or in our real life. I sure appreciate all of you who have contacted me and will be catching up on my spark mails and contacts after a big trip to Adventureland Amusement Park with the junior high summer band on Tuesday. I'm praying for good weather and a really lovely time in their water park. I am not sure that this hip will enjoy the amusement rides as much as the "kids."

Gentle hugs,
Sylvia

Okay, I need some help. I think I'm experiencing my first wall/plateau at 217 pounds, and I can't take it anymore. I will do anything to see the number 216 at this point. Advice would be terrific.

Hi John. For the team goasl, I had simply missed putting in an amount of people that we would like to see. Thanks for asking so it was brought to my attention.

Great job losing another 2 lbs! You are rocking it!

Does anyone know why all of our team goals say that they are "undefined"? Shouldn't we actually have a number based on our 12,000+ team members?

Before I joined SparkPeople, I spent the last few years lamenting the fact that I was on disability. I have to say that it's strangely nice to have this free time now that I am pursuing something worthwhile. It makes all the difference in the world - thanks to everyone at SparkPeople!

PinkPlumeria,

I'm sorry to hear about your experience with the physician - it's happened to me and to quite a number of other people. I got a new specialist as a result. Problem solved.

The cool thing is that you lost 2 pounds and that you didn't use food to stuff your anger. At the end of the day, that's what really counts. Congrats on the weight loss!

My Yesterday VENT......

A TEN hour doctor visit, that really only took 15 mns. Yesterday was my doctor check up rom when I fell & hurt my knee. My appointment was at 1:00PM. I got there about 12:30PM. So I waite. I took along my crochet bag & crocheted as I waited. At that mommet he didnt even go in to see the guy who had the 10AM appointment. 2:00PM came & went. He finally got to the 10am guy. I waited & crocheted some more. 3:00PM came & went. He was still in with the 10am guy. I waited & crocheted some more. 4:00PM came & went & he was still with the same guy. There was 4 people ahead of me. So I waited & crocheted some more. Then he finished with that guy & moved on to the next one. She took 1 1/2 hours. Then he moved on to the next one. 6:30, 7:00 & 8:00PM came & went. In between all theses hours the wanna be MMA fighter guys came & wanted to get their check ups because they are so SPECAIL . NOT. I was still waiting. By this point I ran out of YARN, had not eaten lunch or DINNER. Luckily I was now the only one in the WAITING room. I had to whole cough to myself. I had to the t.v. on, I was watching my favorite shows. I was laying down not comfy at ALL for the next 3 1/2 hours. Then came 10:45PM. I was told am next. It took another 15 mins before he got to me. I thought I would be there for the next 1 to 2 hours. But NO I was in & out in 15 MINUTES. I was happy & upset at the same time. I was happy he said my knee looked good. No call for seeing a knee doctor, just to take it easy & be more careful. I was also happy I lost 2... TWO more pounds. But yes I did,, the first & only meal I had all day was BREAKFAST at 7:30AM. My next meal wasn't until after MIDNIGHT. I was mad because when all the other ones got 2, 3 or even 4 hours of his time,,, I only got 15 MINS. Just like by that time I wasn't worth his time. I so need a new doctor & am tired

Good luck in the race!

Very glad to be at the end of a very busy week. Trying to get 5 days of work done in four days is hard. I did get a great long walk in last night. Picked my oldest daughter at her office in Newport News then we took my youngest daughter to sand soccer practice at Buckroe Beach in Hampton and we walked for 90 minutes on the boardwalk and in through a neighborhood. We are going to do it again next week and another mom or two will join us. Also got my bike fixed and rode that one evening.

Didn't get much done around the house since I got home so late ever night, but I did get my exercise in. For once I put that before anything else.

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

We can do this!

I did not know it was coq a vin day and I've never made it. Interesting to see the lighter version though.

Is everyone glad this week is almost done? I sure am. It's been an especially busy week at work and I'm really ready for the weekend. Doing the Race for Cure in DC on Saturday with my Mom and a friend of hers. The only part I don't enjoy is having to get up so early and be at the metro at 5am! (I'm NOT a morning person).

Thanks CarolsMom1,

The recipe wasn't from an email, it was one I found on the site in response to pinkplumeria's post about coq a vin. Usually, if I like a recipe on sparkrecipe, I just click the save button and it stores a link to it in the same window as my recipe box. I think that's probably what you're referring to, but it's good advice for others who may not be familiar with that feature.

John, there is a way to put an email recipe from SP into your Favorites:
Open up the email
Click on the banner at the top of the recipe, and
it will come up in a new window as a document.
Then store on your Favorites.

Hugs, R

I didn't know coq a vin had a day. I've made it in the past, but traditionally, it has a lot of calorie rich ingredients such as bacon/side pork, bacon, wine and brandy.

Just for kicks and giggles, though, I searched sparkpeople recipes and found this not-so-calorie-rich version which seems pretty decent: recipes.sparkpeople.com/recipe-detail.asp?
recipe=168248
. In fact, I think I'm going to try this one out and see how close it is to the original.

Did You Know May 29th is National Coq au Vin Day? Coq au vin or (a.k.a. chicken in wine)

Have you ever tried this?
Do you have a recipe for this?
How do you make yours?

I have never had this recipe. I have never even heard about this recipe before today. But I do like chicken & wine. I do know that some recipes do call of meat, poultry or fish to be soaked in wine for added flavor & to help make them tender.

This afternoon at the hospital was quiet--only two runs. That gave me time to read a new book on sleep, and those of you who exercise early in the mornings are right on for increasing your energy. The best time to exercise for sleep is three to six hours before bedtime. Lots of good suggestions. Also, I took the SP cookbook and found a recipe to try this week. This was a good day. The pedometer did not rack up many steps, 8156 at this posting at 4:30 pm. Enjoy your evening.

BTW, to get a better picture of the pigeon and monkey, go to my Spark page. They are best friends. Another cute picture is of a bear in a water bucket. emoticon R

Anyone cooking out today? Healthier dishes than normal? I am grilling bison steaks, ground chicken breast burgers with chopped peppers and spinach in them, a marinated turkey breast, grilled asparagus, zucchini and peppers and sweet potatoes.

Holly smokes. I never thought I would see this day again I never thought my weight would ever go down. I thought it would take forever FOREVER to lose even 1 pound. Then I hurt my knee a weeks ago. I wasn't able to really move let alone work out. I thought for sure my weight was gonna go up. But this morning when I went to a friends house to get ready for church. I went into the spare room & got on the scale. I was SHOCKED when I read what it said. I got off & got back on 4 times to read what it said. It said I dropped 7 SEVEN pounds. The only real new thing I have done was drink more water & eat less RICE. I feel so good now. WOOHOO

Well Tomorrow will be my second weigh in. I am almost at my 2 week mark of joining this site and so far so good. I have been eating well and walking consistently day to day. I am ready to start incorporating more into my workouts this week.

I have been using basicly every aspect of this site except for the community, so my goal for this next week is to get more involved in the communnity. What better place to start then with all the people who started this journey the same time I did.

Congrats to all for sticking with it so far, I know it can be tough but everyday you are making a healthier you!

I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me

I'm sorry to hear that your having some difficulty with your arm and knees, Ms PINKPLUMERIA777, but it speaks to your inner strength that you have the determination to work past your dislike of situps/crunches. I'm sure that this won't a big set back for you, but I wish you a speedy recovery from both the bruise and whatever may be wrong with your knee. I'm hoping it's nothing serious. emoticon

As for myself, I'm loving this place. Started a week ago and already I've gotten so much support and encouragement. Been doing some strength training, and have decided to cut out a few junk foods at a time to maximize the odds of my success, because cutting out everything is just asking for major cravings to happen. So far it's been soda and bagged potato chips.... Makes me kind of want them, but with what I'm aiming for....My determination to stay on track gets me through it. Currently a little sore from this morning's workout, but I have the cure for that. WARM BATH. I noticed that it helped sooth my muscles last night, so it's probably going help with any soreness and potential cramps.

Hello & good luck all new comers. I hope you all like it here. I know I do. I wish you guys all the luck with your goals. To anyone who lost wieght. Thats AWESOME. SO proud of all of you. But if you gained a pound. It's ok your still AWESOME. You will do it next time. Your all awesome beautiful & spceial. WooHoo go team. But as for me.....

This week is not looking good. This is why I haven't been chatting much in my groups. My left knee is still hurting, but today there was a crunchy feeling today. Then my left arm as this numb tingly feeling. I tried to take the pain but I couldn't. I ended up going to the E.R. I wasn't there long. I got 3 x-rays each of my knee & arm. Nothing is broken. But the numb in my left arm is due to a deep bruise when I fell. I might have pulled a mussel or a ligament in my knee. It all should heal in a few days to a week. I do have an appointment to see my doctor next week. Back in the 90's I already had 2 knee surgerys on the same knee. So that's why i try to be very careful & worry about my left knee.

But on a good note. This week I have been doing sit ups or as they say "Crunches". I have always hated sit ups but I gotta do something to stay on top of this diet & this time around. I did 20 sit ups yesterday. Not bad but getting better.

Hi Pinkplumeria,
Congratulations on losing that first pound!
So sorry to hear about your ankle, I hope you feel better soon.
Try not to get too discouraged. While your ankle heals, you can focus on exercising areas that do not aggravate your injury such as upper body and abs. Keeping up with your good diet will also ensure that you continue to have good results.
Take care!!
Beamee

Well I was having a great week. I burned all the calories they said I needed to. I only went over my daily food intake once. I stayed away from my food weakness RICE for 6 full days. Then last night I fell, twisted my left ankle & banged my left knee. It didnt hurt that bad until I got up this morning. Then I couldnt take it, so I went to the Urgent Care. They gave me good news & bad news. Good news is nothing is broken cause I can still walk. Bad news is I badly sprained my left ankle & twisted & Banged my left knee. They said I need to use ice & heat on it & let it rest for afew days to a week. They said it should heal in a week or I have to go back if it doesnt. I just starting week 2 & I cant exercise the way I did last week UGH. Looks & feels like I take 1 step forward & the world knocks me back 2 steps. Well nothing I can do but use ice & heat & let it heal. But on a side good news. They weighted me in & I lost ONE pound. Woohoo ONE pound down & 49 more to go...emoticon

I don't eat much souffle, but I do eat burgers. I use bison sometimes and ground chicken breast sometimes. Both low in fat. I chop up bunches of veggies small and add them to the meat before I cook them. We grill year round. I eat mine on a whole wheat arnold sandwich thin, or lately on Ezekiel hamburger buns. That is much thicker and more satisfying and I love how it has no flour but it made from only spouted grains and seeds.

Sylvia-I hope you get some answers soon. I know how hard having hip pain/issues can be. I dealt with them for years and still do occasionally.

Today was yard work for me. Planted some flowers and DH tilled up some more yard for me to plant a few more things. We have a lot already, but I added a few more variety of peppers and some lemon cucumbers and more spaghetti and buttercup squash. I like it so much more than butternut.

Hi all,

Lots of eating going on here in May--souffles and hamburgers--both of which are easy to put into a healthy eating plan. I can;t giver up burgers--but I make them much smaller or I use ground turkey or veggie burgers in their place. I am an absolute tomato lover and love to eat anything with tomatoes. A nice burger with a juicy tomato on it, all on light 7-grain bread is yummy, especially if we have cooked it outside on the grill. (I have all but given up pickles, which I have loved because the sodium is so high.)

OK, enough of food chat from me. I didn't get my dinner finished because our crazy doxie lab got into my plate when I left the table and went to the rest room. I decided that I didn't want to start again, so now it is late and I am a bit hungry. I will go get some strawberries or melon in a few minutes to fill that void. Good news from work today--my boss seemed to have gotten her hand slapped and the dumb training day on the last day of school is off. Yay. That had bummed me out more than I can explain. Some customs need to be maintained.

My visit with the physical therapist was a bit more confusing. She certainly acknowledged that there is something that is wrong with my hip. Her initial feeling is that it may be an injury rather than arthritis, but I haven't had any spills or bumps or falls of any kind since I fell on the last day of October. When I fell then, I injured my left side, not my right side--so I don't think this is left over from that fiasco. I guess I just need to wait for the what and how when I see the orthopedist on Wednesday. She did help me to tweak my pool exercises a but so I can keep going with them and gave me a couple of other suggestions to try to help me manage my pain. She doesn't recommend a lot of walking, but I don't know what to do with that--I get in about 12,000 steps each day and most of that goes along with my job. I'll think about this and figure out what I need to do for myself.

Have an awesome weekend everyone!!

Did You Know May 18th is National Cheese Soufflé Day? Did You Know National Hamburger Month?

Do you like Cheese Souffle? Have you ever had one? Do you have a favorite Souffle recipe?

Do you have a favorite Hamburger recipe? Is hamburger 1 of this things you gave up?

Hi Kit, I'm too late for your dinner too, sorry! Have you checked out spark recipes? There are literally TONS of really great recipes there. Like Sylvia I'm more simple these days. I've been doing "clean eating" and eat only whole foods and foods as close to their natural state as possible. Nothing from a box or in a jar, etc. Here's the link, just in case you haven't seen it yet. Come back and let us know what you had :-)

Sylvia-sorry about your day. Just read and commented on your blog.

Hi all,

There are lots of ways to make friends here at SP. I totally recommend getting your spark page up and running to start with. That is the way that others can find you and leave messages and goodies. You can click on an icon when you set up your page that says you are looking for a spark buddy. Also chat with people on this team and choose a few other teams that match your interests and needs, and you will meet up with a lot of people with similar interests.

As for your chicken--I know I am a bit late, but go to the top of any of our pages and type in "Chicken" where it says "Search." You will get some ideas and it probably will direct you to recipes of some kind or another. I am at the place where I prefer to eat fresh produce with my meals, so I am not a lot of help. It depends on how you fix the chicken, of course. If I do it in the slow cooker with salsa and taco seasoning all day, I like to shred it and have it in a tortilla with lots of veggies. If we grill it, I like tomato slices and fresh corn on the cob. I am a pretty simple eater these days.

As for me, we are down yo 11 more days of school and our boss sprung an all day staff meeting on us for the final day rather than the traditional day to wrap up our files and paperwork, a staff luncheon and an early release for us. I am so upset about this because it is to dump another new program on us that she wants. We weren't even given a say on all of this. I am not a happy person after I volunteered to tutor at the park program during break and now I won't have a chance to get ready for the first day. I need to get over it and figure it all out.

Take care everyone--I'm glad that you are here and that you've found us.

Good evening everyone. My name is Vanessa but most people call me by my middle name Nikita or Kit. I love to cook & bake. For the last 12 years I have been taking care of my 77 year old Uncle. I do all his cooking, cleaning, shopping & errands. I just joined this site this evening after fighting with my weight going up, down & up for years. For years now I have had high blood pressure, high cholesterol, allergy, joint & body pains & pre-diabetes. All this runs in my family. I never really found any one in my family or friends that gave me support & help to lose the weight. The only thing I did that was the best for my health last year was I stopped smoking. But I did gain a lot of weight giving up the smokes. I hope to meet my goal of losing 50 lbs & becoming healthily & maybe finding & making some new friends who know what am feeling, thinking & going thru. I look forward to coming back everyday to see whats new & how am doing.

Happy Mother's Day--and Welcome to SP and to our team page!!

It's a beautiful day here in the Quad Cities and we are looking at predicted 80 degree temps all week. I am really excited about warm, dry weather to give my joints a break from the past couple of rainy, cloudy weeks. It will feel good as I wait for my medical appointments for the massive pain in my right hip. (I am hoping that all it will need is an injection.)

I wanted to get to our team page last night, but I fell asleep with the laptop and then it froze, so I gave up on it. Here's my best as you all take off on the best journey of your lives. SP is the best.

Best wishes,
Sylvia

Hi there,

This past week has been very hectic and full of rain. The rain let up long enough so that we could take our all-school field trip to the baseball game. I put hours and hours of work into the ball game and it turned out wonderful in spite of the nay-sayers. People didn't think our younger kids could "handle" it. They did just fine--and the ball bats were swinging--our team won 14 to 3. (It is the Quad Cities River Bandits, the A level team for the St. Louis Cardinals.)

Tonight, we went to see my daughter's high school musical--they did "Dames at Sea." It was quite fun and the music was, as always, wonderful. Marissa had two roies, one was silly,"Madame Sin Sin." The other was part of the chorus and she was so involved. Whenever she sings or acts, you can just watch her face and see how she becomes her role. I love watching her and hearing her beautiful voice. It is hard to believe that she is only 16.

I didn't go to the pool today. It was so disappointing when I couldn't do any stroke yesterday because of the pain in my hip. Walking in the water is fine and fun and great exercise, but I really love to swim (even if I am not good.) I hope this hip lets up after getting a bit of a break--I doubled my walking today in place of swimming. I will go to the pool tomorrow. My husband usually goes with me on Sundays.

That's about it, except for the homework. I have to read one more article, finish writing 3-200 word summaries, read a book and write a critique (by Tuesday) and do a take home essay test by Monday to be done with my classes. I know that I am here to avoid that work--I need to get myself on the ball and take care of business.

That is my very short term goal--I can do this!
Gentle hugs,
Sylvia
